I took the early retirement in 2014. I have no regrets. By my calculations, I made more $$ by my 3rd year retired to cover the potential lost income by staying all the way to 26 yrs.
Additionally, the time commitment away from family was enough for me to make the decision.
Nice! Thank you for your service!
Thank you Sir!I have 1 month and 1 week until retirement. Enlisted 01/2001. Commissioned 12/2008. Small break in service.
By the time I retire I’ll just be over 20 years. Bye bye military. Culture definitely changed drastically in the last few years.
Congrats to everyone on their service and/or retirement!

I miss the clowns, not the circus. My troops/peers are the only reason I would have stayed past 20, nothing else. Just like you, I racked up 300% plus (over 20 things were claimed, all but one were approved).I did 30. Almost to the day.
I never intended to.
I used to say that I would drop my packet at 18 1/2. But I kept ending up in assignments with people I cared about, and I felt like I had a responsibility to them, to look out for them, to mentor them, and to take care of them.
Finally, the stars aligned, and the last of the guys that worked for me got good assignments and I was in a position where I could drop the papers and go without leaving anyone flapping.
So I ran like hell. I ended up over 300% by the VA, and while I dont regret a day of the time I spent in uniform, I often look back and think “What the ****?”
Sorry for digging up an old thread, but this “Veterans Highway” thing needs an infusion I think.
Yeah, the VA surprised me. They even added some things in that I didnt claim. They based it on my prescription history and the such.I miss the clowns, not the circus.
