Can someone tell me what the best top soft top uses to seal at the rear door or show me a picture please.

Tim

If you mean how does the rear window seal at the bottom to the tailgate? They use a strip of self adhesive velcro. If you are putting the top on a 75 or newer rig that came with ambulance doors, you have to get a tailgate or filler plate for the rear window to attach to.

So it is just Velcro to the doors. :frown: Sounds cheap. I am making new doors and trying to figure out how the top seals.

If it's the rear mine has snaps on the tailgate. I have a Best Top soft top and can take pictures if you would like when I get home.

Hogan where in minnesota are you I could possibly look at it. I would like to see a picture. I may just buy the top so I can see how it mounts up before I make anything.

Heres how my Bestop Supertop secures at the rear......

I can't get that velcro strip to stick to my Aqualu tailgate.

I bought the Bestop snap kit when I used to have a Bestop. Required drilling, but the snaps were more secure than the velcro. I still have a spare kit with the anvil tool if you need one.

My Dad used to put stickers on aluminum boats. If I remember right, he just washed the hull with vinegar until he got a good shine, then put the stickers on. Let me know if that works, I will be getting a Best Top later in the spring.

Interesting. I had the same problem with mine. And mine's painted. I washed the area down with denatured alcohol beforehand, but it pulled off like the 3rd or 4th time I pulled the rear window off it. Mine's a kayline, but it's the same deal. Fortunately mines got a bar that goes across and locks it into the sides so it works OK without the velcro.

Use a heat gun to warm the adhesive... it will stick better. If it is pulling off from the end use a rasor or scalple to shave off the hook/pile on the last 1/4".

The 3M velcro will stick like poop to a blanket when warmed.

When I put mine on I just cleaned the surface, grabbed the brides blow dryer and warmed the surface a bit before applying the velcro....Mine sticks like it was made to - I open it up probably every other day too......always getting things out the back...

Associated question regarding Bestop

I'm putting the soft doors on my rig for the first time and the rubber weather stripping by the door latch is preventing the door from closing far enough to make contact to close the door completely. Should I cut it?? Has anyone else had this problem??

I hav snaps in the back of the rear door and they work great!!

You may need to adjust the striker thingy. I would not cut it off the foam rubber. I know my doors are hard to close, but they do close.

Adhesive rules:

1) Clean the surface

2) Warm surfaces for some adhesives are better

3) Press it on hard. Get all air bubbles out from between surfaces

4) Don't load it for 24 hours

Agreed, I have to think if you follow these install guidelines the velcro should work great. I didn't get mine on real straight and after a couple of days decided to pull it off. I had to pull reaaly hard to get it to come off and it took some of the paint with it. You can buy replacement velcro in rolls from Lowes or Home Depot.

All of the new tops are shipped with velcro. Remember the strain on the rear is taken by the sides where they hook under the metal lip. The fasteners on the rear window are just to reduce drafts or flapping. The velcro, if installed right, forms a better seal. You can install snaps like the old version had but you also run the risk of tearing the snaps out if you arent careful and once they get grunged up with dirt or really cold they can be a pain to snap or unsnap.

If your going to buy velcro, anything by 3M sticks wherever you put it and will not come off very easily. Be careful, I've rushed using 3M velcro and kicked myself for it later.
