So should I really chuck my K&N? (1 Viewer)

I'm going to be driving 1,000+ miles of dirt roads this from now through fall. Does the stock really flow that much better? How often will I have to replace that thing with dusty road driving?
 
Meh, it is a good filter. You won't notice a difference in flow in the seat of your pants. Keep that K and N serviced nicely and your old tractor motor will be just fine.

Folks like to take this stuff a tad bit overboard.
 
K&N is a great filter. I havnt used one in 20 years but from my past experience, it did prove to work very well when I lived in the desert southwest. Bring the cleaning solution and oil to clean it if it gets plugged. A garden hose with a pressure nozzle aimed at it from the outside pointing into the center will force out the particles.
 
I've used a K&N off road and were there another good choice for that vehicle I would round file it immediately.

The issue is not flow unless you're talking flow of grit. I've done everything that I can think of to stop grit from showing up on the INSIDE of the filter. Things like greasing the filter's rubber end seals with heavy bearing grease etc. Nothing, absolutely nothing would stop the grit from appearing on the inside of the filter can. Running the filter sloppy messy dirty helps a little bit, but not by a lot.

Oh yeah, one more thing. On trucks that use a MAF, if you over oil the K&N it can put droplets of oil on the air flow sensor, jacking the computer up something fierce..

X2. i've run k&ns for years. it kinda makes sense that they might be a problem on newer motors since a lot of people tend to over oil them, but on your motor, it will work just fine and save you a ton in filter $$

I ran a k&n for years, in moab, and never had trails of dust inside my carb :confused: on the outside, i don't care....the outside's gonna get dirty whether or not there's oil there.
 
I have run them for years and honestly was skeptical untill this year's moab trip. we did hundreds of miles of driving on dirt roads prior to and after the event and even though the outside of the filter was literally caked with red dust, the inside was spotless..

that's just me though..
 
Lots of test out there for filtering ability of the K&N compared to a paper element.

Consider this tho. Most off road racers do not use K&N's they use large paper elements..

let's compare apples to apples here;)



btw, wondering where you're getting your facts :confused: i'm finding a lot of off road racers using k & n.

A. Oil bath air cleaner does not equal a K&N
B. How many modern tractors use an oil bath air cleaner?

Your statement is similar to suggesting that a old Siamese port Cruiser motor replace the 2F.

Even K&N recommends that you shield the air cleaner if you are in dusty conditions.

Do some reading. Increased air flow without increasing the actual filter area has a cost.

BTW, I have also seen filters clog faster because they are of the oiled gauze design when a large paper element has survived.


Honestly I could not care less if you believe me or not. It's entirely up to you.
Personally, I am not a fan of K&N's.

But, I don't like snorkels on trucks that don't actually cross rivers either..
