So I went to do my front brakes today...

They were squealing pretty badly on one side... I assumed the pads were down to the wear indicator.

Get the tires off... hmmm... no anti-rattle spring is the first thing I notice. :hmm: Ok, well that might be part of the problem.

Then I look at the pads. Practically new. PO must have done them pretty recently because they're plenty thick.

Ok.

Then I look more closely... no anti-rattle plate. :bang:

So I put on anti-rattle plates and springs, clean up the retainer pin with some steel wool, and take her for a spin. MUCH better. Still a little squeak. I suspect that the bozo that did the last brake job didn't use any anti squeal goo either.

Aftermarket pads will have a greater chance of squealing too, even if installed with the shims, springs and goo. If you want no squeal, OE is the way to go.

Agreed. OEM only for me.

me too. but i think the only way to get the "M" spring clips is to buy an aftermarket shim kit. i got mine from Napa. parts were identical to the Toyota ones, just included the extra parts.

yeah, I'm going to put the Toyota pads in tomorrow... I should have done it while I had the tires off. (the most time consuming part of the whole process)

I'm using Akebono Ceramic on both my 100's. No issues whatsoever. Stops better than OEM, even with stock rotors.

The price of the OEM's are not too bad and might be the best choice. At least you know what you are getting and with a ton of recommendations.

Slee is also now recommending OEM pads with their 100 brake kits. They may be recommending them for other Cruiser models as well, I had no need to inquire about models other than the 100.

Also to the OP - did you check to make sure the front rotors were secure? No play in wheel bearings? Make sure the spindle nuts are tight. I had a UZJ one time that had brake issues and it was a loose spindle nut allowing the rotor to "walk" inside the caliper that was the source of the issue.

good point... I'll be putting the new pads in shortly, and I'l check for play.

I'm going to be rebuilding axles, CVs, bearings, rotors in the coming months so that will be addressed soon anyway.

What are the recommended replacement brake pads for Power Stop rotors? (Front and back) the part numbers are confusing as heck.

Funny that this thread just got bumped as I just recently replaced the practically-new pads that were the subject of this thread.

I used DBA rotors and Toyota pads.
