Hi all, im toying with the idea of either building or buying a snorkle, im not 100% sure yet.

I like the cowl hummer snokles found on some jeeps, -

i like the way they look, theyre unusual and they dont stick out from the body and get caught on trees. also in its favour the cowl design is low key compared to a safari one.
however that area on the pzj77, actually all 70's, doesnt look suitable because of the way the hood is attached, and the brake and clutch bits are arranged on the firewall. so probably ill elect to go something like this

i Really like the snorkle on the Dakar 200 Series, the way it ends is so tasty, but, its rainy here in Ireland
so an open end like that would not be a good idea, sad face!

anyways, after all that, i have a question, what to do about the viscous fan when immersed in water?? :)

cheers,
Redd .

The thing many people dont realize about snorkles is this; they mostly have nothing to do with water. Snorkels put the air intake far above the ground therefore feeding the filter box much cleaner air. That's why its good to get a snorkel.

i have a visual in my head of the fan churning water all over my engine bay. i suppose a rad blanket is the asnswer.

Yes that is a good idea if your going through something very deep

I have taken mine to the tips of my fenders
Have you considered a safari with a 10in pre cleaner
I can post a shot later if you like

Yah i was looking at the Donaldson pre cleaners, a good option no doubt. plz do post a pic yah

Hi Redd. I have a Safari snorkle on my 74, Remember last winter lots of rain and snow no water got into the air filter box. I go off-roading in Carrigh and Annagh woods with Leinster 4x4 and no damage from trees to the snorkle. I think Safari make a very good product. Some photos on Land Cruiser Owners Club

I live in very rainy Prince Rupert and I was having issues with the original ram head sucking up a ton of bugs and rain water. I did tilt it to the side but It still would suck stuff into it all the time. I would accumulate rain water in the catch can lots.... I thought this was mainly from the water crossing to a fishing spot but I found it that rain was also the culprit after better sealing my airbox with plumbers wax. Pre Pre-cleaner.

Since having the pre-cleaner I have caught a variety of dirt, leaves and snow so far.
its going to be an interesting winter driving snow storms to and from the ski hill and even the spring when all the bugs and dust come.
To be completely honest I prefer the pre-cleaner to the ram head.

p.s. redd you should post a few shots on the 70 series registry or mod thread at the top of the 70 series section!
I want to check out these XZLs

ForealBoreal......To be completely honest I prefer the pre-cleaner to the ram head.
Does the "mushroom" cap have the same issues with collecting water and debris?

The design of the Donaldson pre-cleaner is to trap dirt and to expel moisture.

That is why it is clear, so you can have a look at how full your pre cleaner is.

There is a new design now from Donaldson

Yeah it catches stuff for sure
I get water in it during heavy rain

I don't really like the new one
I wonder how the lighter design would hold up getting smacked by tree branches

I also found a new Strata Cap Pre-Filter

"The Donaldson Strata-Cap is the highest efficiency self-contained pre-cleaner ever offered by Donaldson. Manufactured of lightweight, corrosion-resistant materials, the Strata Cap is a 2-in-1 injection molded, space-saving (above the hood) pre-cleaner and rain cap unit. Three part numbers are offered to accommodate a range of airflow requirements – from 350 to 1,300 cfm. The Strata Cap pre-cleaner has no moving parts, making installation and service a breeze, and its low profile improves operator visibility. As a scavenged system, a connection to the vehicle's exhaust system is required."

Interesting options...

If I had my time again I would make my snorkel having it inside the guard and exit like this one

Possibly just a little closer to the screen...
Keep it all tucked up out of the way..

Donaldson make some nice bits and pieces for fabricating your own snorkle, like flexible rubber elbows and aluminium tube from 2 inch to 10 inch diameter

I suggest reading this thread on Snorkels and pre cleaners. Their is lots of good information on air flow restrictions if not using the right set up. Also if you check out the pics I posted on post #59 you will see an extreme example of how much a pre cleaner can catch. I like the ARB/Safari unit because the clear plastic lets you keep an eye on whats getting in there.

I cant remember, is there a filter element inside the pre-cleaner or not?
