OK, I was planning on adding a snorkle later on down the line (after new rubber, lift, sliders, etc.)

Thing is, with a ton of lights, compressor and solenoids going on roof, I'm considering getting one sooner to help conceal all of the wiring

Now, I'd like to get a closed top snorkle cause I'm sure all the neighborhood kids will think the standard top would be a good place to put cigarette butts

I don't really mind losing out on the claimed Ram Air effect for the added safety and peace of mind....

Anyhoo, I remember seeing a hat top (not sure what to call it) with sortof a glass can so you could see when stuff gets sucked in

I believe I saw it on an Arctic rig

What closed top options are there for the 80?

There are pre cleaners available for the snorkles. These are good when the vehicle is used a lot in dusty areas. If your only concern is objects being put in through the mesh in the ramflow then you could put a finer mesh in behind the front cover. Fly screem mesh works well.

Well, I was hoping for sumthin with a little more intake protection....

Like if someone were to crack open a bottle of soda and pour it in  (you don't know the kids in our hood lol)

Something like this? (off an Isuzu NPR truck)

I think you can find those types of pre-cleaners at most tractor and/or farm supply stores, since they are pretty common on construction and farm equipment.

I've heard that they dont' work very well at highway speeds and probably shouldn't be used for that type of driving. Anyone know if that's true?

The other "hat" style is probably like this one that the Aussies and others can get as a factory option on the 70 series. I've never seen one of these snorkle intake style stateside, so I don't know if you get get them here. http://www.brian894x4.com/LC78brochurepic1.jpg

If you ask me ther is nothing better than the OEM Toyta Snorkel for the 80. and it comes with a precleaner..

You´re right!... It´s more beautifull... BUT... The problem is that... IT´S NOT A SNORKEL it´s a Pre-Cleaner for sand...

If you need a snorkel to cross rivers, have to do a lot of works in it...

I know because I have it for Rally´s

Ahhhh.... hummmmmm.... The pre-cleaner is only the top, rather then the scoop it has an added filter... the rest is plumbed the same to the air box, thus being a snorkel moving the air intake to the roofline.

But that’s just my understanding.
