Hey all I have an issue with my cruiser. All is well except for 30 seconds after a cold start, then it smokes like a son of a gun. The colour of the smoke is bluey grey, and it only happens on a cold start. Other then that it never smokes! Does anyone have any idea why and how to fix it? I think my nieghbours are geting pissed off!

Most of them do that , do you wait at least ten seconds for the glow plugs or do you crank it over right away? If you do wait for the glow plugs and it misses and stumbles then I would get them checked and replaced like Old Blue suggested.

Same Problem

I have the same problem. It stumbles and runs rough for a bit. It is a 2LTE with a good battery, new glow plugs and serviced injectors. It runs good and starts when plugged in fine.

I hooked a test light to verify the timers are working and glow plugs all work.

It is definately over fueling as you can smell diesel and it will leave black on the snow behind it.

I would be interested in a solution or to know if I have to live with this.

I just checked each one while in the head from positive to the plug. The light came on. I then checked from negative to the rail and watched the light when turning on the key. It stays on for about 6 to 8 seconds.

What are you thinking as I just put a full new set of glow plugs in. Could they not ground enough or some other issue. I tryed the old ones and they all worked but were quite corroded or damaged on the end. It starts exactly the same with the new set as the old one.

Try this, turn the key on for about 5-6 seconds then turn the key off, then turn on again for 5-6 seconds then go to start the motor.
This will heat the combustion chambers a bit more.
Is this problem only when in cold weather?

simple answer, wilson switch...

Im thinking the same thing. As an engine gets older the warmth from the glowplugs is not enough to make it run smooth.
Ive had some experiences with other old diesels where I would keep the glowplugs on until it ran ok.

It coud also be that the power supply to the plugs is not what it used to be. I dont know how you would fix it except check and clean all the connections you can find or use an alternative source for power direct from the battery

Even after New glow plugs, good compression, battery etc. the symptoms persist. U might want to read this. i did this on my prado after suffering for 1 1/2 years of smoke and stuttering.

the coolant sensor might be buggered, causing the fuel pump not to push enough fuel when cold.

Regards.

I would have thought the coolant sensor adjusted the time the glowplugs were in operation or is there another sensor for this?

disconnect the temp sender and the system automaticly revert back to "coldest" start

My toyota has a resistor on the bottom of the intake. What is the chance that I have 12 volt glow plugs and a system that was designed for 7 volt glow plugs.

I hooked a jumper from the battery and waited about 6 seconds and it started fine. I then had to rush around and disconnect. It was a light jumper and was just starting to get warm.

I am getting closer I think.

Although I come from Darwin NT Australia where it is never cold, I did on occasion have the smoke from the rear problem. I found that the injectors were old and after I had turned off the motor, and was parked on a slight hill, a little fuel leaked into the cylinder, and when I started would puff on out. Just something to look at really.

Just a fyi, I now make my own bio diesel. no black smoke ever now!
