Hi there,

I have a bj71 deiselLandcruiser and when I start it in the morning, it pushes out white smoke for about 5 minutes. After that the smoke dies out. After that I only see smoke come out a bit when I punch it, and it is usually black. I notice there is a bit of black residue on the back of the Cruiser from the exhaust. I also have to keep adjusting the timing as it goes up and down constantly. The power is good, and no oil drips from the engine. If anyone has any thoughts on this issue, I'd appreciate your advice.

Thanks

how does it start first thing in the morning? starts easy or cranks for a bit?

white smoke can be coolant (not likely), over fueling in a cold engine is another possibility...

cheers

White smoke usually occurs when there is not enough heat to burn the fuel. The unburned fuel particles go out the tailpipe and typically produce a rich fuel smell. It's not unusual to see white smoke in the exhaust during cold weather until the engine warms up. Bad glow plugs or a faulty glow plug control module can cause white smoke on engine start up. Low engine cranking speed may also produce white smoke.

If white smoke is still visible after the engine has warmed up, the engine may have one or more bad injectors, retarded injection timing or a worn injection pump. Low compression can also be a source of white smoke. Air in the fuel system can also cause white smoke.

I would check and tighten all the injector lines. My guess is one is leaking.
If its a rough start ,not running smoothly on all cylinders, that would partially confirm it.

Do you mean by "adjusting the timing" you are moving the pump??
This would be very unusual.

Where are you? What are the ambient temps in the morning? Has this just become more noticable now? How long have you had the truck? Has any servicing been done with the engine/air/fuel systems?

Thanks

gb

5 mins a long time. or longer than should be. Check the glowplugs, or replace them

You might have one cylinder or two that are not glowing... How hard is to catch and run?

A friend of mine is having the same problem with the white smoke I thought white smoke ment too much advance and black is retarded in injection timing. His engine is a 1HZ I checked the resistance and got 3 - 3.1 ohms. Checked the glow plug switching and glass beaded the bus bar on the glow plugs. It starts great it just runs crappie and smokes white. We checked the timing and the belt seems tight. I tried to adjust the injection pump and advanced it until it ran out of slot. Could the blet be streached? Maybe fuel filter cloged? The injector were just rebuilt with noticeable decrease in fuel concumption. Alot more throttle response too.

White smoke is a cooling of the combustion process which can be caused by many things, retarded timing,air/water leaks, bad compression.

To produce white smoke, the fuel has had time to condense after injection.

526 psi or more is good. The mimimum is 384 psi..No cyl should be more than 71 psi diffenent .

White smoke

Thank you all for your help.

I have had some problems with air in my fuel system when it gets cold. I have had to let the air out of the line twice, to get my cruiser going so maybe the smoke is connected with that problem as you suggested.

I have to adjust the throttle dial next to my steering wheel quite often to keep the revs at the right speed.

I get a large blast of white smoke right away when I turn the engine on, then it comes out of the tailpipe for about a minute after that.I thought it was 5 minutes, but I was wrong. After the initial blast of smoke, it's not too obvious. There might be a bit of blue in the smoke as well.

The engine turns over very well, as long as I give it a touch of gas.

I live on the westcoast of Canada, and it's damp here.

Cheers

Air in the lines will definatly cause white smoke.
I would tighten the imjectors lines preferably with a injection trunnion spanner. ,its like a ring spanner.
Then tighten the lines at the pump.
If the hand primer is leaking ,replace it.
Check the your fuel systam for seepage
