05 LX470 with 200k miles smell gasoline odor underneath fuel tank. No leak detected on the floor. What would be the issues?

The charcoal canister is right by your spare tire, maybe it’s just venting pressure from the tank?

You could have a pinhole at the top of the tank that is causing vapors to escape but is located high enough and/or is small enough that there is no liquid leak yet. Is your tank rusty? If so it may be time to replace it.

This is your number 1 suspect. Also if you drop your spare tire you can also shine a light up towards the top of the tank to get a glimpse at the hoses and other doo-dads up there. Always good to clean all the mud / debris out of that area as well.

>> Do you only smell it when you fill up the tank or all the time?

>> Suppose you could disconnect the hoses going to charcoal canister and see if symptoms change? Will probably throw a check engine light.

There are metal fuel lines that run down the drivers side of the vehicle, check those to see if they've rusted through. You can also lift the back seat, pull the carpet up, and remove the fuel pump access plate to inspect top of the tank for leaks.

Hole in top of tank?

Just removed the fuel tank to do a leak search and found that vent valve and fuel pipe rust out and rubber gasket cracked. No leak on tank but have rust covered. Cleaned up and put old tank back, replace vent valve and fuel pipe with OEM parts. Done!
