I've had my SM465 sitting on my garage floor for a few months and I was going to remove the bellhousing and the GM transfer case adapter from it. When I bought it, the guy said it worked fine, but I figure before I go through the trouble of installing it, I would clean it up and pull the inspection covers and see how everything looks.

I know when I drain the fluid, I should look for shards of metal and what not, but what else should I look for? Will the gears be visible enough to look for excessive ware? The output shaft turns easily, and it shifts into all four gears easily, but I doubt these are sure signs of a working transmission. Any tipis would be appreciated.

I've heard these things are built like tanks, and I don't have to rebuild it, if I don't have to. I've heard mixed reviews on the ease of rebuilding them, I more worried about having the proper tools for the job (i.e. hydraulic press).
