Ok, because of the flurry of SM465 questions, I thought I would throw mine in.

The Classic Cruiser/Woody's adapter requires you to drill the output shaft. What if it has already been drilled?
Can you use the cruiser 4spd tcase with the Classic Cruiser/Woody's adapter?

Thanks.

i'd say yeah... find a bolt that fits in there and get a thick washer machined down to the right size. i believe the whole reason of the bolt in the output shaft was to set the proper preload on the t-case.

If I am not mistaken the bolt in the output shaft keeps the first transfer gear on the output shaft. The t/case as it was originally designed with a longer through case shaft, spacer and PTO gear The short shaft means that the spacer and PTO get tossed and the bolt is the only means of retaining the first gear on the shaft. Which is why it is critical that that bolt NEVER loosen with out intending for it to come loose. Loc-tight / Nord-lock are both good means of keeping it locked in there. Classic Crusiers adapter has a nifty little washer /spacer that matches the splines on the gear and provides a bolt with a wire lock.

Please let me know if I am wrong. I am planning to assemble my 465 next weekend!

Or adapter gear..

There is another way that pinhead cam up with to lock the bolt down. It involves drilling another hole in the output for a roll pin and using a washer as a bent lock.. Works great.

You have a 2wd SM465 that has a 10 spline output. You need a 3 speed tcase or the 74 transition gear. Not hard to find, but they typically cost around what a whole three speed tcase goes for..

Is that drilled deep enough to tap for a bolt? Mine had a shallow hole( for a bearing puller I think). I used the Classic Cruisers shaft as mine had some ware on the splines. Did try to drill the old one for grins, got no were with any kind of bit. Real hard stuff.

The shaft is surface hardened after it is ground and machined, so it may not be possible to tap it without drilling out the case hardened surface. It may also be harder to drill.

BTW, I didn't invent the fender washer method for locking the output shaft bolt. This method goes way back to before I had a cruiser and maybe even back to Danny Warden's dad who did the first sm420 swaps back in the 60s at Stancil's Toyota in Placerville. I learned about this from a guy in my club, SoCal TLC.

No, it is a 4wd model, had an NP205 attached to it, and the hole is tapped. Half thought about just replacing the rear axle with a chevy model. But once I start down that road...

So this adapter gear, can this be purchased at Classic Cruisers or ....?

Thanks

Check with Marksoffroad.com or Cruiseroutftters...

Good luck!

Isn't the adapter gear is for installing a 3 spd case on a 4 spd transmission?

So the adapter/transition gear would be 16 spline inner and the right tooth count for a 3 spd tcase.

There was a gear made by Toyota for a while that has the four speed tooth count/pattern externally and the 10 spline input....

Tommy Carins has one in his 465/Toy 4Speed case set up....

there was an ad. in Toyota Trails awhile back of a guy who made the gear for an sm465 to 4 speed, he told me 95 dollors for the gear.

I'm running an sm465 to 4-speed case. I got my adapter gear from Cruiseroutfitters for about $80.

No affiliation.

Sweet
Called Classic Cruisers today and they want $130 for that same gear, I will call CruiserOutfitters tomorrow. Need that, the adaptor plate/gaskets/bolts/ect...

If only I had the money/time/energy to get it done...

Not to get off topic but...

Can the Classic Cruiser / Woody adapters be used with both the 4WD & 2WD trannys? I thought the 2WD had longer output shafts than the 4WD.

Do both trannys have the granny low?

The adaptor plate doesn't care whether it is bolted to a 2w or 4w sm465, because it only bolts between the tranny and transfer. The problem is that there is no transfer case input gear that fits on the 2W 465 output shaft splines. The 4W 465 has a ten spline output shaft that is compatible with the 3sp gear. Other than the output shaft, the 2W and 4W version of the 465 are the same.

This is very helpful. I have just picked up a 3 spd LC xfercase and bell housing and now I'm looking for a SM465. I was worried about mistakenly buying a 2wd tranny. Now I know that I just need to make sure I get one with the 10 spline output.
