I'm thinking of putting an SM420 (or SM465) xmission in the 40. How much should I expect to pay for one? Now that I'm looking, I see all kinds of old pickups in various states of disassembly, so I'm thinking maybe not much...

Thanks for the link Mike - I ws hoping to find something closer than Oregon, but may have to consider it. The NP205 has a center rear output though...

I guess there were two different SM465's - two different low gears. Anybody know how to tell the difference (other than marking and counting revolutions)?

don't know about gear ratios. i thought they were all the same. there is a 4wd and 2wd version though. it doesn't matter which you get if you get the main shaft made for the lc tcase conversion. otherwise, you want the 4wd version and have the tail shaft drilled and tapped for a washer to hold the lc tcase input gear on the shaft. i think i have pics of mine somewhere. probably not in digital.

what are the 2 ratios you've heard of?

I'm sorry Steve. Would you prefer that I constrain my searching to 100 yards of your house or can I extend it out to 1/2 mile?

:D

I suspect there are probably about a thousand unused ones within 40 or 50 miles of my house. Since you are a computer guy you may not realize that I probably don't need to go to Oregon for it, but here's a clue: They can't email it to me.

;-)

OUCH!

Good comeback Mikey...

Rudy told me at the mtg yesterday that he has a SM420 in his 40 (behind a V8). FYI.

Ali, remeber it says rookie under my name. I said I was pretty sure that I had the SM420, but the casting numbers were difficult to find and confirm. It came with the rig when I bought it. From my research of about a week that was the closet I found. If anybody knows where I can confirm what I have that would be great.

Nice thing about the 420 is it is the same size as a Cruiser 4speed. First gear is 7:1 instead of around 6.4 or 6.5 (IIRC) in the 465. Bad thing is they haven't made them since around '67 and I don't think all parts are available anymore. But they are cheap, and if you find a good one, they make a great swap. George Morgan is working on a 40 that the owner bought a rebuilt 420 for, but he hasn't got that far, yet, so I can't say anything about how it goes. It's very difficult to find that tranny from a 4x, but even with a 2x tranny, the adapter is about an inch thick, and I think you don't have to modify driveshafts.
