So I have been trying to help tighten up the steering on my 93.. Much like others, it is very sloppy.. Makes it a bit of a pain to drive on the highway especially when it is windy. Things I have done are as follows:
1. Rebuilt knuckles replaced all seals and bearings wheel and trunnion. The trunnion bearings really needed it.. (Used parts from cruiser outfitters)
2. Replaced all tie rods and drag links (555 parts from Cruiser Outfitters)
3. Replaced steering stabilizer
4. Adjusted the steering box adjusting screw a bit.. Not much help. I did not want to adjust it too much. Did maybe about half a turn at most.
5. Did a DIY alignment
So is there anything else I should check before I tackle rebuilding the steering box? Or look at getting a rebuilt unit from Rock auto or elsewhere?
Thanks for any suggestions..

I swapped out my steering box with the rebuilt one from Cruiser Yard last year. ~200k miles on the original one, it was leaking. I had no idea how sloppy it was until I put the new one in. Now the slightest movement on my steering wheel gets response. I got a refund for my core..I think it was about $600. Money well spent. CY was a pleasure to deal with.

That's what I was thinking I need to do next.. Get the steering box rebuilt.. I see on Rock Auto you can have Cardone rebuild your box for around 350 bucks.. You send it in they rebuild it and send it back to you..

west texas offroad will also rebuild your box too and does a bunch of toyota ones. I called them about 2 weeks ago and they had an 80 series box that was already rebuilt they could send to you to swap immediately. then you just send yours back to them. I was going to do it but I need it to be ported for hydro too

Any idea what they charged?

Are we talking about stock height or lifted?

Also worn suspension bushings will cause all sorts of crappy steering and handling as well.

If you decide to do all the suspension bushings, I bought all of mine at one time through partsouq.com. Saved $150 more than McGeorge Toyota and another $200 VS Olathe Toyota.

Also, if needed, I have a 20T press you can use. I still need to install all my bushings as well. Planning on this summer.

Call them for the price but it was like $200 for the rebuild if you send them your box. If you buy the one they have you’ll pay the core until they get your box

Ahh ha exactly what I needed.. I was wondering how the heck I would get the old bushings out.. Since I don't have a press. Sounds like I may need to make a trip up to see ya in the near future.. Thanks for the offer.. BTW any chance you have the sales order you made with partsouq that states what bushings you ordered? That would be helpful to know what all I need to get.. I figure 26 years old bushings with close to 300k miles on them it is probably due to have them replaced.. Thanks Mark!

Sent you a PM.

$200 rebuilds a toyota steering gear box using OEM parts, does anyone know? That's a good price for folks who don't wanna monkey with it.

I seriously doubt it, it's not cheap to have Toyota bless your o-rings. My guess, anyone building a lot of them would buy that stuff in bulk.

Agree. I still want to rebuild this thing at home just for S&G.......
