Brain (Ridgerunner) and I went to look at a couple different diesels today. I am considering using the Mazda 2.0 diesel in a samurai project. I know nothing about this engine so I thought I'd present it to the diesel guru's on mud. I need to learn more about this engine and how it would compare to the volkswagen 1.6 n/a diesel as thats the normal diesel used in the diesel conversion for samurai's. Can they be turbo'd? etc...

thanks
dave

That's an Onan, no? Would the VW be better supported parts and info-wise?

I have a N/A diesel mazda bongo truck and a Turbo Bongo Van so yes they do make a turbo version. If the N/A diesel in the 1/2 truck pushes it around ok then I think it would move a Sammy just fine. With turbo it would be good but the parts availability might be a killer.

How do the Mazda 2.0 (RF?) engines hold up?

Brian and I were also looking at the bolt pattern for the transmission... just curious if it matches up to anything other then a front wheel drive transaxle? and which transmission would be best for a small 4x4 like the sammi?

Not too sure how well they hold up but I can say they were abused as fleet vehicles (well maintained though) and the only reason why they were sold was because of the rust. The gas truck took 1h 45min to blow with a battery on the gas pedal, that impressed me a bit for a mazda engine.

the Mits 2.7 out of the J54 or the J53 would deffinately move the sammi around and they stand up to tons of abuse...
first hand experience
i have a 2.7T complete with tranny if you are interested...
