I was turing in a parking lot tonight, very slowly, and I heard a fairly light clanking noise.

turned in the other direction and same thing...

only while turning and only while in motion and not at full turn, like a birf would do.

any ideas here? maybe my calipers?

just had the front end all gone through not long ago when I had new gears put in.

what say mud?

Is youyr truck lifted? Possible your relay rod is hitting the top of the control arms.

If it is more of a single clank, it could be because the upper pan hard rod hole has worked itself into an oval. This sounds funny but my 80 only makes the noise if I am in a parking lot or wheeling hard.

one or two clanks... really, not very loud but noticeable.

never heard it except in the parking lot and doing a three point in the road to back into my driveway.

odd.

Is the sound continuous while in motion, or just one clank?

EDIT: I see you answered that already.

Maybe the lower control arms need to be re-tightened. I have to do this every once in a while, or it will make noise on slow turns.

just had the same issue resolved 10 minutes ago. The steering was feeling a little loose, and if you turned the steering wheel left or right there would be a clank.

Turned out that the nut on the adjustable panhard bar was loose. I tightened it and the noise is now gone.

Diagnosed by having vehicle in park, and having friend turn steering wheel side to side.....You could feel in the bar where the pop or clank was coming from.

Hope this helps...

had same problem on my lifted 80 ,it was the front sway bar bushings

Sometimes I think the tie rod is flipping from one side to the other... I can replicate the "clank" that I hear occasionally by turning it by hand, either the one in front or behind the axle, they both flip from one position to the other and I can get a little thunk sometimes..

Rattle shims on the brake pads???? had an issue in the past ....one or two clanks going slow forwards and backwards

check make sure they are there and installed properly. they do rust out

Have the same issue! Driving me crazy!

Got the same problem. For ages I thought it was drive train related but only today realised it is there without the vehicle moving. Did this problem get a solution?? Cheers

honestly, no... with holidays, rainy weather, etc...no chance to sink my teeth into the issue.

when I do, I will post back.

in the meantime, if anyone comes up with more ideas...please update.

Check your sway bar mounts on the axle. They've been known to break. If they break completely loose, they can take out brake and ABS lines.

i have the same issue ! It started happening right after a birf and brake job. I also have replaced some bushings (front arm, sway bar, panhard)

I have not had a chance to look into it yet.

I have this clank as well. Smooth as butter on the road. Truck drives great, stright and no-loose feelings.

Was under it (twice with a flash light) to check for anything loose or broken. Couldn't identify anything wrong.

But coming out of my driveway it gives me one clunk. some times in a three way turn it will clunk twice, going into the turn and our of the turn. Most likely from the front.

Doing 8 in the parking lot to get it to generate the clunk I can get it sometime but not always.
I can also feel the clunk not only hear it.
It is not a bang, and it is not a bierf clicking.
I had the bierf clicking so I know it is not that.

Theoretically I like the idea of the relay rod flipping and clunk. The sway bar mount point are good. But some of this components shift direction and clunk on somehing. I have noticed it after my last off-road day.

Got to get under it while someone is driving but not trusting the wife or the kid to be at the helm!
