OK I read the FAQ but this is frustrating.

dont have the vehicle yet but i want to grab a head unit.

what width, heighth and depth is the radio location for a 1976?

looks like single DIN will fit but should be a 6.25 shallow model.

crutchfield no longer lists size and amazon measures the box! haha.

good inexpensive name brand single DIN that fits?

looks like JVC so far. Sony too long. I like Alpine and Pioneer but not sure.

Thanks!

It's not just depth but width. the unit is. The Fj40 radio opening is narrower than modern units.

yea i saw that too. hate to dremmel out a bit but may have to be done. looks like JVC is best 6.25 deep i think 7 1/8 wide.

Get a Tuffy console and put it in there.

Thanks. it is an original bench seat model. I will review options. Trying to keep stock as possible while making a few concessions for tunes.

Thanks. I am assuming the dual shaft/ knob models are not as deep. and then u can adjust for width.

what are the exact dimensions of that stock opening?

I like the idea of the dual shaft retro look. one downside is with a softtop still the temptation to steal (even if worth nothing). they ruin the top or the dash to get a $10 stereo.

2x What Spot said. Install the headunit in the Tuffy box. No cutting required.

My FJ40 has original split bench from 40 years ago thus no tuffy box. Man the stereo options for these are rough. You got crummy shaft style options or cut for a modern DIN. shame nobody makes a decent shaft style unit.

i just measured this a moment ago because i am looking for a tray insert to put in instead of a radio. the hole in the dash is 2"H x 6-1/8"W. didnt measure depth. its not a standard DIN

thanks. due to the nature of the originality of this FJ40 I am gathering that consensus is to leave the dash uncut. suprising there are not more dual shaft retro modern head units. I will go with one of the pyle units or maybe even an original unit.

That's nice. This one has no cage and soft top. i think i willl do the dual shaft el cheapo style and keep it original.

Has some small 4 inch speakers I don't even see how you run the speaker wire from the dash to the doors with out drilling the doors.

The previous owner had done a restoration my guess is they redid the doors. He has the blank spot for the radio but no radio.

I think I due the XC4100 that the gentleman above mentioned. and do quick disconnect to these 4 inchers or replace them. would be neat to do the 4x6 under the dash and feed it to the rear of the head unit but this one has only 2 channels (so u can take the doors off!) it has the rear view mirrors not connected to the doors.

All this is immaterial bec I know about stereos. without an amp and a small sub you wont hear much in this cruiser!

Once i get my hands on it I will figure something out.

What type of music are you going to be listening to? (FM radio, CD, AUX...)

If you are interested in listening to your ipod or pandora through your phone only, you should leave the dash as-is, and just use an amp to drive your speakers. All you'd need is an aux-in cable for the audio signal. You'll use your ipod/phone to control the volume, and just hook the remote signal wire to your ACC in your ignition, so you amp is not on the whole time.

If you look at newer decks, many don't even have CD players in them any more. They are more of just an amp with an aux-in. I don't understand why they're still so deep though!
