Hola, so just about to take the plunge on a JDM (after finally getting back from overseas.) Iv found a truck of interest just wanted to see if anyone here had any opinions.
1989 BJ74 13BT, full floating, manual, etc...

The outfit is called Silk Road Autos in Surrey, just off King George highway, has anyone had any experience with them yet? they seem to have a lot of those Diesel Vans etc...

The only other thing that seems to tickle me funny is the Oil pressure; at power it gets up to "maybe" 1/2 way to the BOTTOM of green line, at idle after shes warmed up it isn't really even moving... the mechanic at the shop was trying to tell me thats totally normal and all their other 13B-T s do the same thing thoughts opinions etc?

-walk

PS: anything else that would be worth looking for?
PPS: theres a button labeled "H4" would that be electric lockers for the rear axle?

H4 is 4wheel drive in high range. Ya might want to post this in Diesel tech- this is a 4sale section.

I bought a vehicle from them last year. Unlike some importers, they are not experts on the vehicles they sell. Before I purchased, I took mine in for an independent mechanical inspection. Silk Roads prefers that you do this as they don't go over their vehicles with a fine tooth comb.

I recommend you have ATEB in Burnaby do the inspection. Make sure that they do a leak down test and run a mechanical oil pressure test. It is well known that stock oil gauges are inaccurate or faulty. Any good inspection will cost between $200-300. You get what you pay for. A BCAA inspection might be cheaper but they don't know anything about Japanese diesels.

Unless Silk Roads have changed their procedures, you should expect to do a complete change of all fluids (and rad cap, belts and hoses if required) if you purchase the vehicle. They do a coolant and oil change but I like to ensure things are well flushed out myself. If you are going to use synthetics, do not put in synthetic oil right away. Put in regular oil and an oil flush to get the crap out of it before putting in the expensive oil.

Apart from their lack of knoweledge about the vehicles they sell, I have found that Karim and his brother sticks to their word (in writing or not). However, he is a business man so you can expect that he will try to sell the vehicle for as much money as possible. Do your research and get it inspected and you should expect good value for your money.

Oil pressure is normal. The gauges rarely show 3/4 on a new landcruiser and at idle the pressure drops off to 5-6 psi.
Do a search on oil pressure,we had a substantial thread recently

If it has lockers they would probably be manual lockers and the levers are on the floor, between the seats from memory.

as for the business, do a search on the web...might be surprised with what you find...

ok... I never thought of that.

but on the same token type in "luxury imports". You only get two hits on there in the first two pages.

But if you dig around deep enough more would show.

I second the recommendation to take the vehicle to ATEB. It will be worth every dollar you spend. A thorough inspection will not be cheap but you will probably avoid big surprises by having one done, and in particular by a JDM expert shop.

good point as well... humm, i wonder if i am good or bad??
LOL!!

Funny name Silk Road when they import Japanese vehicles. Does "silk road" mean they import Chinese cars mainly?
All the BJ-74's I have driven or ridden in alway show low oil pressure on the gauge, very low when idling. Must just be the gauge design.

hey walker, does he have alot of 7x series sitting on the lot? about what is he selling them for? im not trying to move in on your deal or anything im thinking about looking for a 70 series for commuting as next term ill be driving alot further to school and my big 'ol 40 is a bit to thirsty for that. just wondering what they go for and how hard they are to find...im on the island if you know of anyplace over here...thanks

Hey thanks for all the help guys; Well I ended up going for it; HORAY! Been driving her for about 2 weeks now and cant find too much wrong with it, a few small systems problems here and there but I was more or less expecting it.
YotaWheeler, he had another BJ74 at his shop: http://www.silkroadautos.com/

So I’m actually more or less happy about it all… I think the total bill came to ~$17K after all the taxes/ one year additional warrantee etc…

24 volt, 5speed, PTO winch, FF front and rear 96,000Km tiers were at about 60%. I think it was in a fender-bender as there is evidence of reasonably well done body work (Karim-the owner DID tell me they did some body work seeing as it was damaged) So it has a new coat of paint and they did an amazing job on the detailing (not that that’s much help once it gets out on the trail… but until then I’m having people take their shoes off…)
so now after I get the electrical and the radio organized, time for some lockers, a new bull bar and a snorkel! My guess is it will be $23,000 by the time its done…
