Just curious is there any new consensus on removing or keeping the VC in the last 8+ years? I'm sure we're now seeing rigs with 300k+ miles on original or failed VCs.
I think the general consensus is that if/when it fails, just remove it. I had one that failed in an LX450 causing binding issues when taking tighter turns and getting into parking spots. A couple hours of work to remove and button it all back up. No more binding issues and there is no negative effects on drive-ability.

Do you get that phantom "clunk" people talk about?
The first symptoms were clicking in the birfield joints.... It just felt all bound up when turning. Once I replaced the birfields, obviously the clicking from the birfs was gone but the binding sensation on tight turns remained. Lots of reading and praying led me to bite the bullet and open the transfer case. All that talk about the difficult to remove C-clip and this soft handed desk jockey had it out in a few minutes.
