Also can anyone identify these transmissions , and are they any good to me The seller thinks one is a 4 speed and one is a 5 speed . I am not near my cruiser to compare the photos to it . I have a 5 speed in it now and would like to pick up a spare if these would work for me ??? Thanks

looks like a BJ60 5 speed. The 3b will work in your 42. Yours must be a rotary pump 3B, which is odd for a 42?

Hope you are getting it cheap. Looks like it was not stored properly.

Cheers,
Daryl

I would not pay much just looking at the parts shape. MIke

Depends on how much and what you want it for. Spares yes, bolt in motor maybe not. Can't say if there are differences between the mounting of the two styles of pump. Never have seen a rotary pump installed.

Biggest concern for me would be if water got inside any of the cases or motor. Cheap enough I would buy the whole pile.

There are some usable parts in that mess. All comes down to how much the seller wants.

Looks like an 82 3B.
The first tranny is the 4 speed, 2nd is the 5speed (has the spacer between tranny and transfer for the 5th gear)

But could also be the 4speed H42 with spacer as used in 60series, no?

did the H42+spacer ever come behind the diesel? don't think so.

H55
cosmetics has nothing to do with internals of an engine. to price something on the veneer is ... well ... ignorant. a pretty engine can be a POS on the inside, an ugly engine can have great internals.
(think women for a minute and you will understand)

do a compression test to get an idea of the condition.
pull the rocker cover and look at the rockers, are they indented? if so then the oil changes have been irregular.
is the inside of the rocker cover layered in gunk? is the head covered with a grease like substance? if so then oil changes have been irregular.
if the rockers are smooth, if the head has a coating of oil then there is a good chance the engine has been well maintained.
me, when i buy a used engine i want to hear it running. in the truck or out, fire the bugger up, let it warm up for a minute or two ... no water? tough. it won't hurt the block for a couple minutes. then do a compression test warm.
if it starts easy then the glow plugs are working. if it starts easy then the starter is working fine. if the compression comes out decent then pay the money.
if the veneer isn't up to your standards then clean it up, cheap and easy to do.
if the veneer is pretty and the internals are s*** then you need to do a rebuild. not cheap, not as easy.

good luck

by the way, i have a 3B and H55 for sale cheap, condition unknown, compression was good, did get it running before i pulled it. plan on rebuild.

But could also be the 4speed H42 with spacer as used in 60series, no?

If you look careful at the upside down and sideways pics you can see the shift linkage for 5th gear on the one gearbox.

The 4 speed is possibly an H41. I am guessing as the tcase shift boss on the side of the case is in a different location than the H42 out of my 82 BJ60, which is farther forward. Is this an indicator of an H41? My understanding was that they used the same case in an H41 and H55, true or not?

The seller wants $1000.00 for the whole lot and a front bib thats in really good shape , parts are 3 hours away and I won't be able to start motor before buying. So I guess I 'll cross my fingers and pull the trigger .
