Some cars in Okinawa are rust bucket POS. Rather, many of them succumb to rust.

My aircraft are required double the amount of corrosion control inspections here compared to anywhere else in the world, except Florida; we are in the same interval.

So from what I gather, this HDJ81 that I posted today comes with the 1HZ diesel engine.

You are looking at a HZJ81V.
HZJ81V -- No turbo
HDJ81V -- Turbo

Thanks crusher, I was able to figure that out after some wiki help but appreciate your input.

Still searching for the one. I saw and passed on 4 LCs in 4 weeks, I hope more become available because I move in 6 days. I'll buy a junker until the right one comes along.

Hey it's ok to post pics of the ones you pass on:)

Would recommend a 8/1993 or newer with all the all the improvements over the previous models from 10/89 - 7/92

Medium-term type: 1992.8 ~ 1995.1 changes:
· Brake reinforcement (15inch → 16inch)
· AT electronic control
· Improved stability 4cm car height down
· Side door
· High mount stop lamp
· Side under mirror adopted
· ABS Option setting

Minor change 8/93

· Changing Freon gas (to R134a)
· Clock function change (Function reduction)
· Meter illumination color change
· Mudflap paint color abolition
· Turbo indicator omitted (1HD - T)

The 1HD-T engine improved the piston and piston rings to reduce oil consumption.
Like the 1 HZ engine, I set an oil level sensor on the left side of the oil pan.

Vehicles Automatic transmissions were converted to ECT
to improve power performance and fuel consumption according to the output characteristics of the engine .

Rustproof steel plate was adopted for the front and rear door frame parts

Pipe-shaped door connecting front and rear doors inside the front and rear doors Re-impact protection
beam was set to improve the door strength against collision from the side of the door

Along with the setting of the wide tire, the overhang of the resin fender was further enlarged, making it more wide appearance design

Adopted a two-step lid on the door of the rear console box to expand the storage space, and improved usability

We set the high mount stop lamp as standard.
(Upward and downward opening: 76 LEDs used,

We have set up a CONTROL SYSTEM that detects the ambient light and dark and automatically turns the lamp on / off

We have set up a lamp auto cut system to prevent you from forgetting to turn off the lamp.

Instead of the conventional speedometer cable, signals from the speed sensor attached to the transmission
of electric speedometer for displaying Therefore electrically speed as standard settings on all models.

Oil level indicator lamp.

@PDoyle I passed on this one this week. Clean 1994/8 model, manual tranny, non-turbo, I don't see a locker switch either...164,xxx kms...sold for a staggering 1.555M Yen or almost 15k USD; not worth the high cost IMHO. The last LC I posted also sold for too high at almost 12k USD...

It is hit or miss. I passed on a 95 with 100K miles, ZERO rust, clean as can be for 9,600 USD. I passed because it was a 95 model and I'm looking for something older for transport purposes. Then I saw a rust bucket POS sell for 12K USD. Apparently there are many buyers from the middle east who pay exorbitant prices for these vehicles in less than commensurate condition. Hard to get decent metrics with the prices all over the damn place.

Hi all, been a while since I've posted pics or anything really but life's been pretty busy. This is a 1994/05 model Active Vacation model. It sold at auction for 950,000 Yen which equates to about $8300 USD. With auction fees, taxes and transport, I'm looking at $12,000 USD.

I think it is a Turbo Diesel but it has a weird looking crossover pipe which doesn't say turbo on it. I can't quite make out what it says on the crossover pipe based on the grainy phone video, but I can't post it on here. The speedometer has that little red light/symbol which I think is a turbo symbol but isn't it supposed to say "Turbo" on the cluster?

Also, the dude sending me the pics and vid said it has an intercooler and the back is loaded with parts and he didn't want to open the hatch to take a look inside because it was that full.

What do you guys think of the pics I posted? Any constructive comments are welcome.

The red symbol on the cluster is the drum brake symbol on early 80series that indicates the parking brake is on. Other than that, all I can add is that there has been some rattle can painting under the truck, seems common with the other rigs that have been posted in this thread.

and it looks like there are 2 antennas or 2 sets of antenna switches.

Check the diff housings for the locker actuators, I have heard some of those cruisers that go to auction in Japan will have the locker switch fitted for the photos and make no mention of it in the description, sellers hoping to catch out the buyer thinking they are getting a triple locked cruiser.

Thanks, wish I could but I'm at the mercy of the dude shopping around in Tokyo. Someone else won the auction; oh well

I am certain it was a Japanese import agent here in Sydney that mentioned this to me, he said his guy in japan would look for things like this if he asked him. Maybe just mention it to your guy?

I have a buddy (from my Navy days) PCS to Spain - to compliment my 60 I bought his 80 when he left the States. He still wants to bring back a Cruiser, but has slowed down looking for one and has been seriously considering the Mercedes G-Class Wagons.

I saw images of the KDY Blizzard in the Landcruiser Heritage Resume. Can you find these in Japan? For my own persona preferences - I would want to bring something back that almost no one else has, and does not look just like models easily available in the USA. But you started this thread stating the 80 was your favorite. I know nothing about the Blizzard - other thank I think they look cool, so forgive me if I am suggesting the Geo Metro version of the Landcuriser.

Veteran,
Thanks for your service. As far as the KDY Blizzard is concerned, I have never seen one in person. There are plenty of 80s to be found here and the Active Vacation model seems to be relatively rare and to top it off having it triple locked is even more rare. I favor the 80s because they offer both offroad ruggedness and the ability to balance suburban environments. Ultimately, I like the 60s styling the best but they're not practical for my family and usage.
