Came as a bit of a shocker, but for all I know this could be accurate? I know the manifold is really hard to access, busted bolts etc. New muffler can't be that crazy price-wise.. But wanted to check if this quote is way off.

Details - I go to these guys because they service the only other 100 series in my town and figure they know their way around it. Mine is a 99 LX470. The manifold ticks nice and loud and the muffler has a hole in it. I'm in Canada, so busted bolts mentioned above is a real possibility. CAD price is 3,800 before 15% sales tax ($4,370) = painful.

Thanks a lot.

Woof. Thats heavy. Must as well do the Doug Thorley headers with some quality fasteners, do it once, do it right. I did that with a full Bosal (nice and cheap) system, super quite.

Do they have to extract broken bolts off the heads? If that's the case it's more labor involved procedure. Did they give you a breakdown of labor and parts?

That's an " I don't really want to do this job" price

I believe you're correct.

My indy did the job, then told me he'd never do a set of headers on a 100 again.

FWIW, I'd also called a Land Cruiser-specific indy shop, and they quoted me $1600 for the labor. But, they were also about $400 over the dealer's price on TB/WP service so, pricey anyway.

That is pricey. A slightly cheaper option (rather than parts replacement) is to have them weld the problem really solidly, then smooth out the inside.

I went this route and picked up a dyno proven 87whp ;)

Canadian pricing is very different from prices in the USA. Even indy shops are a lot more expensive here. At least in the Toronto area. Where are you located?

When I needed to replace the manifold (includes catalytic converter, but basically the same amount of work) on our GX470, I called around. Most shops declined to quote. Even the so-called Toyota/Lexus specialists.

Toyota quoted me around $120/hr and said it would take a minimum of 6 hours for just one manifold, but if something went wrong I would be on the hook for any additional cost to extract studs etc. Surprisingly, Lexus of Richmond Hill gave me fixed price of 2 hrs @ ~$150/hr + cost of the part at retail cost. I think once you have done a few of those, 2 or 3 hours is very realistic.

The rest of the parts that you have requested to be replaced are very costly too. Not sure what is included in the quote, but just the muffler is around $800 at the dealer. Gaskets, and other pipes quickly add up.

Btw: I ended up replacing the manifold myself. Got the best price through Discount OEM Toyota Parts and Accessories - ToyotaPartsDirect.com for the manfiold/catalytic converter. Studs and gaskets came from Partsouq.com. I did buy a 14mm semi-deep 3/8 impact socket from Snap-On and with hints from this forum I was able to replace everything in around 6 hours (one side). Probably saved $600 overall and spent around 6-7 hours on the job.

I started to do it myself and decided to bring it in after stripping a couple of bolts at the header. I got mine done for 1100 for the pair, I provided the headers. This is in NYC where the labor rates are pretty high and my car needed the nearly all the nuts torched off one side. It did take them about month to get it done though, haha.

Shop lift $1,700
Engine hoist $300
Exhaust manifold and gasket $330

That only leaves them with $500...

Yikes! I've been told (by 2 shops) I need to remove my header to get a stuck and rounded-off o2 sensor out. I think I'll just keep dealing with the bad gas mileage and CEL. Forever.

Did you just follow the FSM procedure, or did you have a write up that you used? Anything particularly tricky about it, or just awkward? I don't have to do it right now, but I'm sure I will eventually and I like to know what to prepare for.

Apples to oranges comparison, but I went to a muffler shop that does a lot of 100 series in Denver CO. I brought them a set of DT headers, OEM gaskets, and a full set of studs. They charged me $600 USD for the install.

Having said that, shops were all over the place. When I got quotes ranged all the way up to $1600 just for the install.

FSM is not really helpful for this job: remove manifold & re-install. There is a thread here that showed all the torque spec's as well as part#'s that I used. Further the two videos below and this writeup from RobRed. The 4Runner video was really helpful on how to deal with the secondary air injection system on the VVTi engines (there is also another video from the same channel). The two nuts on the manifold connecting to the SAI were almost the most difficult part of the job. They did not even look like nuts anymore, and I had to use helical nut/bolt removers to remove them. Also, I used a medium torque 450 ft.lb impact wrench with long extensions and the 14mm swivel socket. Because of the torque losses I don't think you can break the studs that way, unlike with a breaker bar. But the continuous hammering seemed to remove the nuts or studs (50/50) more easily than I was expecting. Sprayed everything with penetrating oil the day before.

Thank you!

Which shop did you go to? I’m headed up there this fall and thinking about getting headers installed

Update- I put the manifold off until I can find a better price. I did go ahead with the rest of the exhaust. Decided to do from the cats to the tip with a kit from rock auto that I would recommend. BOSAL KIT16583992.

Its a bolt on kit but for me, the flange after one of my cats was missing and just welded to the next section, so I had this shop do the whole install, with the weld and extra pipe needed. Labour came to $500 CAD.

thanks for all the info. Manifolds are not an easy job but also definitely not ~$2,000 for just labour on just one manifold... sad because that quote left a bad taste in my mouth on this shop. If they didn’t want to do it, they should just say so.
