I have a clutch question...most of the time it works just fine...when I'm driving it shifts with no problem. It's when I put it into neutral at a light or something...or if it's sittling idling...it doesn't want to shift. Most of the time if I rev it a bit, it will shift. Sometimes I need to put it into reverse to stop the engine, and then it will shift. I replaced the bushing under the shifter, and so when it does shift, it shifts like butter. I replaced the clutch master cylinder a year or so ago...could it be a vaccuum issue? How do I check it? Any ideas would be appreciated.

What kind of landcruiser is it. I take it has a vaccum assisted clutch, but I dont think thats the problem.
It most likely needs a clutch kit including a clutch plate ,pressure plate and thrust bearing.

I dont understand why you have to put it in reverse to stop the engine:confused:

It's an 83BJ60. If I'm at an intersection and I have people waiting behind me, and it won't shift, if I put it in reverse it will just pop into first or second. I don't want to do it! because it isn't smooth going into reverse, and I don't want to damage the gear...but it works...

It's got about 290,000 kms. It doesn't grind when it does finally shift, it sort of either does or it doesn't. I wish I knew more about the mechanics...I really don't know what's going on when the clutch plate engages. I used to drive VW busses, and had to rebuild those little air-cooled engines every once in a while. I've replaced a clutch, but since I'm a girl, never had "shop" in school, I've just picked up things as I've gone along. The landcruiser is a bit intimidating, but is just a machine, I guess!

What about the shifter seat? Can you pull the shifter up? If the seat is good it shouldn't move up at all.

Shifter seat is good, I replaced it this summer after someone suggested that they disintegrate in there. Went from no shifting at all to shifting again. This other problem has been gradually getting worse since then. I haven't checked the slave cylinder yet, will do that next.

Thanks

Sometimes the selector rods become sloppy in the top cover.
They can be rebuilt. Im not sure if you have to drop the gearbox to do it.

my guess is the slave or master is leaking, replace both as a set. if not you will replace one and the other will go shortly after...
