Hi everyone,
A friend of mine with an 89 Hilux pickup was having engine problems recently and took it into a local shop in Edmonton. Today the shop informed her that the motor has seized. This truck had 100k or so when it landed and is up to about 150k now, so needless to say this was a complete surprise. So far we have little information on it but are trying to dig up more. I can tell you that the shop confirmed the oil and coolant levels were okay. The motor can only be rotated about 2 degrees in either direction, and clunks at each stopping point.
The owner reported that the truck was being sluggish, missing, and the RPM would fluctuate. The engine would occasionally die. It would rattle and make more noise than usual when started but then the noise would subside. The symptoms were originally attributed to gelled fuel lines and/or cold weather (-30). The problems did seem to occur right after the last cold snap
So were still trying to figure out why.. The shop wants to pull the motor so that they can yank the oil pan to see how bad it is. They figure the engine will have to be pulled anyways to repair and/or replace.
I am wondering to myself why this would happen on an engine of such low k. It seems to have happened gradually over about a week’s time. Can the wrong type of oil cause a seizure in this time frame? Oil changes were always done at a shop and they used an aftermarket filter (will try to obtain the type and part #)
Any thoughts are welcome..
Daryl
