Hi everyone,

A friend of mine with an 89 Hilux pickup was having engine problems recently and took it into a local shop in Edmonton. Today the shop informed her that the motor has seized. This truck had 100k or so when it landed and is up to about 150k now, so needless to say this was a complete surprise. So far we have little information on it but are trying to dig up more. I can tell you that the shop confirmed the oil and coolant levels were okay. The motor can only be rotated about 2 degrees in either direction, and clunks at each stopping point.

The owner reported that the truck was being sluggish, missing, and the RPM would fluctuate. The engine would occasionally die. It would rattle and make more noise than usual when started but then the noise would subside. The symptoms were originally attributed to gelled fuel lines and/or cold weather (-30). The problems did seem to occur right after the last cold snap

So were still trying to figure out why.. The shop wants to pull the motor so that they can yank the oil pan to see how bad it is. They figure the engine will have to be pulled anyways to repair and/or replace.

I am wondering to myself why this would happen on an engine of such low k. It seems to have happened gradually over about a week’s time. Can the wrong type of oil cause a seizure in this time frame? Oil changes were always done at a shop and they used an aftermarket filter (will try to obtain the type and part #)

Any thoughts are welcome..

Daryl

i too am wondering why if the oil presure was good it would die as such.
here is my experiences, when a motor seizes by bearing failure you can not turn it at all. if you snapped a rod then you can sometimes move the crank a couple degrees each way. before paying to have the engine removed maybe get then to drop the pan and drop the caps for an in frame inspection. shoudl be about $200 vs $1400 for R&R an engine.
if there is an inspection plate on the bell housing maybe check for a bolt or stone jambed between the flywheel and the bell housing (yes, i had this happen to me before and i thought it was a dead engine)
do the cheap things first and work your way up...
just my suggestion, BTW your buddy emailed me but i could not help him wih an engine but i would look at rebuilding he one you have if he is keeping the truck for the long haul...
which shop is he at?
cheers

Hi Wayne...Wes here. The truck is at Japanese Motors as they were suggested by 4Wheel Auto. We'll call them tomorrow (or Monday) and get them to do what you suggested before we have them remove the engine.

Thanks,

Wes

I guess something from the head could have fallen down too. Valve, precup.

I would tow it home. Start pulling the pan off. Then try to look inside the engine, pull an injection nozzle shin a light in, or insert a bendy light. You might see something. If you can't then pull the head.......saying you never seen any thing on the bottom end.

I would not let the shop pull the engine, yet. But I am cash strapped individual.

Just out of curiosity does anyone know if the 2LT-II will fit in the pickup?

Daryl,
you might be onto something here, it could be a precup... never thought of that, definate possibility

I've had a pre-cup drop on my 3B before, not a pleasant experience. It was excessively rattly all of a sudden with no apparent cause (at the time). When it quit shortly after it was instant off, no banging just off.

As far as I know the "L" series engines can be interchanged as the "B" series engines can.
