Hello everyone,

I have the privilege of caring after a 1993 80-series with ~230k miles. In my 5 years or so of ownership I’ve put on about 12k miles.

I recently had some work done (the shop found that the exhaust cam was way out of spec and replaced it with a used, but in spec part). They also noted that the #6 injector sticks at times. This causes the truck to run rough and was the reason I took her to the mechanic in the first place. Since I don’t drive her a lot, it was recommended to try an “induction service” and for me to drive it and see if the injector starts working better.

Nothing has improved, and I decided I would get the injector replaced. The shop is recommending I replace all 6 injectors. The cost of the parts is an eye-watering $2500ish.

I seem to remember performance car people having injectors upgraded and rebuilt. Is this (or something else) an option here?

Thanks in advance,

DJ

Don’t take your Landcruiser back to that shop. Exhaust cam out of spec?? Red flag right there. 1fz injectors rarely have issues but some of us have removed our injectors and sent or took them to someone who cleans, refurbishes and flow tests them. I sent mine to RC engineering in Southern CA. They are fast and won’t break your bank? At the time it cost $150.

If you are unable to do the labor yourself, it is highly advisable to take your cruiser to a reputable Land Cruiser shop. These shops have a lot at stake in their reputations because the Land Cruiser community is well connected and we talk to each other a lot.

Not sure what an "Induction Service"...... Sounds to me like a burial........

Cams on these don't "go bad" unless some wackado was in there wrenching and doing it wrong. It could be THAT shop doing to stupid stuff.

Do what @baldilocks said. The wait will be long at a quality shop before you can get in.

Honestly, these trucks are easy to work on if you take your time and follow the FSM.

Many folks here had never turned a wrench before their LC and this site......

You can be the next one up on "Who wants to work on my Land Cruiser!!!"

To start with 6 injectors do not cost 2500... a little over 1000$ for new oem is more accurate.
I had all 6 of mine serviced for 120$... waste of money based on the results.

You are also stating symptoms of a melted engine harness that melts wires near the EGR by the back of the head. This is a more common issue than a bad cam.

Also broken injector plugs on the harness will cause this on a 28 year old truck.

Thanks everyone. I’ve been at sea since my previous LC specialist shop closed. Time to find a new one in the Portland OR area.

This happened to me, do you know what the engine harness is for?

Ummm.....the engine?

It has the wiring for all the sensors and the injectors in there.

I just got my injectors back after sending them off for service. After nearly 200k miles, only two had less than ideal flow rates and/or patterns. $18.00/ea plus shipping to have them cleaned and checked from Mr Injector in Dalton Gardens, Idaho.

Getting them out is not terribly difficult - just that you have to remove the intake, throttle body, EGR and upper manifold to get to the fuel rail. You'll probably have one or more already broken injector connectors or will break one or more disconnecting them. You'll also then have room to inspect the main harness as it routes past the EGR tube.

$2500 is insane.

Man thanks for the info. I will be setting up a repair request with Mr. Injector.

Replace all vacuum hoses while in there. Easy to do with manifold off, not so easy to do with it on.

My 93 had a misfire, seems to have corrected itself with new vacuum hosed and injector harness connectors. Harness connectors are something like $3ea

This shop is popular enough that my opinion doesn't matter much, but sent my injectors here a while back and they are great to deal with.

The shop I use and trust in Denver specializes in the 80. They assured me I would not be happy with getting the injectors sonic cleaned. They told me cleaning usually makes them worse. I went with new and haven't looked back.

Odd because countless members here have had their injectors serviced and see like-new flow rates.

Induction cleaning is usually done on direct injection vehicles. Take it to another shop, personally I would be doing a full tune up before I messed with the fuel injectors in this situation.

Goodluck
