Like most 80's, mine had the perpetually loose second row plastic steps. Didn't matter how many times I put in those little step nut things, they would always come loose quickly. I debated buying WitsEnd step nuts (which is still an excellent option) but decided I wanted it fixed NOW, without waiting for shipping or anything. I used some pliers to wiggle the studs back and forth until they snapped off, then I drilled holes through the floor where the studs were fixed. I used a bit of paint on the bare metal and then went to the hardware store. I bought four stainless, button-head M8X1.25 bolts 40 mm. long, four stainless M8 flat washers, and four stainless M8X1.25 serrated flange nuts. I am very happy with how it came out. No more loose steps! If you decide to do this mod, don't tighten them down too tight or you'll break the plastic step (I know this from sad past experiences). Please excuse the crummy cellphone photo, but it gives you an idea of the final product.
