I finally (like 6+ years later) got the second plate style stock tire carrier mounted to the 40.

The tub is Aqualu aluminum. I've had the spare tire side on there for quite a while with no problems, although I don't drive the 40 all that often.

Early 40s had left or right side carriers depending on the year, I had hoarded one of each in anticipation of this project.

(I had to make the left side body bracket, it's getting painted and not in the pictures.)

Still need to figure out where to mount the license plate....

Some cruiser parts outfit makes a license plate bracket that mounts via the spare wheel lugnuts.

Darned if I can remember which outfit that is.

Edit: The one I recall looked like the spare tire mount jerry can bracket base sold by SOR and Man-A-Fre but the outer plate was set up for a lic. plate. Heavy duty part specific for 6 lug LC.

Did find this universal fit sheet metal version from Smittybilt:

Modified stock right side bracket.

Bought a 76 years ago and after I bought it fount it had a right hand catch was bolted on the left side. Have a second 75/76 tire carrier also missing the catch. Was able to source a good used one and a NOS. Thought about adding a second carrier to my 73 FST. Figure with a tailgate the right tire carrier had to be open anyway so second one wouldn't hurt. Believe the bracket mentioned to hole the license plate bracket is a ConFer Jerry can holder.
