I haven't torn into it yet, but all my seat belts roll-up slooowly. Half the time the kids jump out so quick and twist the belt slightly before it has a chance to roll-up much at all. Any ideas, or do I just deal with it? Not a huge deal, just a minor annoyance. They also need to be cleaned as they belts have food, etc smudges all over them! :crybaby:

I remember there to be a Lexus TSB on how to clean the "pulley" part (the highest point wear there is some friction) of the seatbelt system. IIRC, that part gums up and they suggested cleaning it with velcro, the loop side of velcro.... or something like that. Could probably use simple green and a piece of cloth and run it through, back and forth.

Are you talking about the part the belt runs through with the buttons on it to adjust the attachment point up and down before it goes behind the trim?

So far I clothes pinned the 2 front belts at full extension and soaked them in a bucket of hot water with dish soap sitting on the front seat. After about an hour the water was nasty! Sweat, food, and who knows what else...They may not work any better, but they sure look better!

yup, that top loop. I've actually been meaning to clean mine up on the pass side...been too lazy and forgetful to do it. I think I'll go do it now!

From the TSB FAQ

SHOULDER BELT ANCHOR TAPE SET
Service Bulletin : BO01901 - AUG 10, 2001 NHTSA Item #: 622728
MUD Notes: The solution is cleaning mentioned and then the application of "flourocarbon resin" tape to the Shoulder Anchor. Toyota part # 73205-48011 Tape Set, Shoulder Belt Anchor
MUD Thread: Safety belts not retracting properly (FAQ)

I bought the kit from Cruiser Dan (~$10) but haven't installed yet.

So far I've cleaned them and "sanded" the anchor with Velcro a bunch of times. Definitely working a little better. I also clamped them open at full extension overnight which seems to have put some tension back into the spring? Maybe it's my imagination? :hmm:

I've cleaned my seat belt pivot/slide portions with velcro repeatedly over the past 4+ years of owning this rig. And I also wipe the belt itself down with interior cleaner (its amazing how much dust and dirt the belts themselves when on the trails) and it does help although it still seems like the spring mechanism could use just a bit more...well...spring.

I'll have to check but the safety belts and/or mechanism are covered by a separate warranty that is 10-years(???)...but they'd probably just say it 'works as intended'...

This problem won't affect how the belts work in a accident. Just how they work when you are trying to close the door. Very frustrating but I doubt you'd get anywhere with a warranty claim.

I've gotten mine replaced before ;)

And? Did it fix the sluggish retract?

just typical Toyota seat belts. That is one of the items that all the Toyota's seem to be deficient in. My 2007 Tundra isn't much better than the 100, 80, 60, 55, tercel or 40s that i've owned. However, the 47 seems to have good seatbelts. Maybe it's aussie improved :grinpimp:

A good cleaning does help, but they just never seem to be that good.
