Eric, I tapped out a few of the minor dents and bends in the scuff plates before sending them out for pricing. I want to be sure that they know what we're trying to make. I layed your scuff plates in the '76 and they fit just fine. My wiring is on the passenger side.

The material used is a big factor since labor is relatively low. I've asked about stainless and aluminum and I've been told that plain sheet metal is the cheapest. I don't know about the rest but I want aluminum as a minimum, NOT plain sheet metal, and I'm prepared to pay a little premium for stainless if the premium is not too bad.

I'm also told that for aluminum or stainless or any "exotic" metal, I'll be buying the whole sheet whether I use it or not so I'd like to see a lot of response since I don't know what else I'd make from a sheet of aluminum.

Can't argue with any of that. Seems dead on.

Opinions, votes of confidence, expressed notions?????????????????????

That would be nice to know!

Are folks interested in aluminum or stainless if these are made? They could be made of regular sheet metal too but I'd think that would be to easily scuffed (as it would require painting) and allow rusting. I'll be making one set for sure for my own truck, in either aluminum or stainless with the nod to stainless if the premium is not too high, and if I make one then it is also quite possible to make a run of them for whatever number of folks are interested.

I have another option here and that is sheet metal that is chromed after forming. Is that of interest over the aluminum that was stock?

Apparently that might be a little cheaper than aluminum.

I need feedback to decide which way folks want to go. We will not be offering choices once this moves ahead and we start making the scuff plates. It will simply be "We're making replacement scuff plates from this type of material and they cost $X, do you want some?"

So if the material is important to you LET ME KNOW!!

My Vote...Sheet metal non-chromed..it can be painted to look like aluminum

I would be interested in alum or stainless, but would prefer stainless if it's not too much more than aluminum.

I'm assuming these would fit on my 79?

when they are missing

:frown:C-G anything you make is better than what I don't have............stainless........aluminum or sheetmetal; all are good for me:D

I'm very interested in a pair of scuff-plates...and materials is sorta a toss-up.
Stainless steel would be very, very cool and probably very, very expensive.
Aluminum could be just as nice, and more original, and though it may last another 30 years, it's just not that durable.
sheet metal, on the other hand would be cheap and strong. And could be finished in any number of ways. Chrome might be nice. diamond plate might be cool. How 'bout expanded steel. Could we get "LandCruiser" embossed in the tread area?
In any event, put me down for one pair (A left and a right) of fronts...are we talking rears yet? And an option for another pair on spec.

Assume so on the rears. All 4 were shipped..

Eric, you have opened a can of worms:lol:............the more I look at my sad scuff plates the crappier they look:frown:.............took them off; cleaned them up as best as I could BUT you can't replace missing metal <ggrrrrrrrrr> I am in for all 4.......aluminum or stainless.......chromed sheetmetal might be terribly expensive; has anyone had anything chromed recently..........OUCH!:crybaby:

Yep, we're talking a full set. Front and rear but without the holes drilled so that you can use them on a truck regardless of which side the wiring is on. For those that do not know, piggies had a change where the wiring swapped sides about 1/2 way through the production run. I think any piggy owner probably has the ability to drill a few holes.

The material options are what has been presented to me. I'm still waiting on a cost which I hope to have sometime next week.

Based on the results of this poll https://forum.ih8mud.com/fj55-iron-...king-up-scuff-sill-plates-you-interested.html and the final cost, I'll decide what these will be made of. There will NOT be a choice when we start making these. Whatever the poll and the cost dictate, that's what we'll make, take it or leave it!

I Wonder how Chrome powder coat would hold up? I want Alum or Stainless myself. I really like the notion of Stainless as it would be really strong and have a long life. But a little maleable character is good. The weakest observable points on the ones I had were where the screws mount (and most of that is rusted in place screws) and the wire side as the span across the wires made the arch structurally weak. Still we are looking at 30 plus year old scuffs.

I don't know if that's an option. I can get alot of stuff done here but some specialty things are simply not offered as the demand is not there, remember Guatemala is only 8 million folks, most of whom earn less than $15/day. The options I've posted are what I was hoping for which is stainless or aluminum the suggestions were sheet metal and chromed sheet metal, both of which were suggested as possible cheaper options. Obviously if we end up going with sheet metal folks will be able to decide whether or not it will be chromed as we can decide what goes through the chroming process. If we narrow it down to that I'll give folks that choice. In that case mine would be chromed simply so they do not corrode as fast.

I've also emphasised that I do not want sharp bends but the smooth bends like on the stock scuff/sill plates.

Yeah I am with you on all that. Actually, the notion of powder coat was just a whim thought once things are done should it turn out to be sheet. Powder coat is easy here and not expensive or set your self up to do it cheaply.

But as I said, like you, I prefer Aluminium or stainless.

I am in for aluminum or stainless (would probably prefer stainless if the premium wasn't too high...it will be price dependent). I do not want regular sheet metal. I have enough rust to worry about on this thing already.
