why wheelbearing grease and not silicon dielectric? Feels like bearing grease would attract moisture?

That is what the book specs. You can use whatever you like. Unless you dump your Big Gulp on the steering colunm you should not have a moisture problem.

It's not the big gulp I fear...it's when little dummy leaves the windows open in the rain storms that hurts my pride....

Thanks for all your help Cdan!

You buy a new clockspring. Also called a spiral cable.

They list for ~275 bucks.

Now if I can figure out how to drive without turning the steering wheel to avoid wearing out that part.... :hmm:

gents.
got referred here. i was going in to replace a plunger since my horn is not working. now i'm under the impression i have the wrong part.
is there a fix or diagnostic for a non working horn in a 97 lx 450? i cleaned the horn ground and checked the fuse. i am pretty sure i would have swapped out the fuse.
also how does this thing come out? i'm not seeing it in the FSM.
thanks in advance.

84312-12040 does not apply to an airbag equipped vehicle. You will need to replace the spiral cable or the combination switch assembly.

hi dan
thanks a lot. i googled the spiral cable/clock spring and i can see how to take it out now.
i am gathering that at 225 K there is no reason to try any further diagnostic? or is there any diagnostic i can run?
also. which part was the combination switch?
i'm really only in there to fix a sort of not working horn. meaning at one point if i moved the "pad" around i could eventually get it to sound. but right now no horn.
any good ideas please?
