* ~look Here to see the whole trailer build up~

Purchased a pair of Scepter MFC's and am working on a fuel can carrier that will mount on the spare tire mount lug plates, as a modular style system.

the front spare tire mount is already complete...
and the rear spare tire mount is currently in 'da works

If It turns out as I plan... I should be able to mount either the fuel can carrier or spare tire to either the front or the rear of the M100 (interchangeable).
And both will mount/detach with the simplicity of three lugs.
Likely one of the three, will be a key'd locking lug.

Here's the basic approach of what I'm in the process of...
~understand that it is an incomplete drawing~

MFCcarrier.jpg

moving right along...

Here's the tire mount that the carrier or spare, will mount on...
had to take 'er apart and re-weld as she was a lil' tired.
~it's now fully welded and will likely get a lil' reinforcement for good measure~

carrier's primary structure, welded up...

IMG_0032.jpg

Here you can see somewhat how the tire mount will be situated...
~the 2 pcs. of 1x2 stock at the top of the pic, are simply there for a mock up visual of the tire mount's positioning in relation to the carrier~

IMG_0034.jpg

left some extra space for expansion...
* note both sides of each can have equal void spacing
and I'll hope they expand enough and fit snug...
but not excessively tight... 'least here's to hoping.
:p

More to come...

Lil' more...

It's been a little hectic as of late...
as I've had too much, time consuming, bull**** in life.
not to mention... I have a girl in my life... and she's a pita. :p

But here's a look at the addition of the vertical supports that the spare tire mount will secure to...
( and in sticking to my theme... will be a bolt on/off deal )

IMG_0066.jpg

still need to do some gusseting and 2 new holes drilled for bolts, to secure the lower mount.

May not be bling... but should suffice. ;)

------------------

and some crappy pics of the STM's mounting position...
(tho it'll likely sit a little lower)

* the STM will be welded directly to the vertical members

* the lower mount likely won't be seen... as the license plate will be mounted to the lower end of those vertical supports and should cover up those ends and the mount.

^ uprights getting cleaned up and prepped for the spare tire mount to be welded on. Supports were removed and fully welded during this step.

But first... beefed up the STM a little... and threw some paint on 'er so's she don't get that orange color to 'er. ;)

I gotta say here... I picked this thing up for $ 20. laying around as scrap at my local metal works... it was a warped twisted up mo fo... and I had to take 'er apart and reweld the damn thing... just to be able to use it... It's still not perfect. Nor ever will be...
But it's gonna do it's job whether it wants to or not. :whip:

MFCmounting35.jpg

Meh... I'm not out to win a ribbon for first prize here...
but as far as function... should hold 'da fort.

MFCmounting37.jpg

welded up the bottom flat stock that supports the bottom of the cans

MFCmounting40.jpg

MFCmounting41.jpg

MFCmounting43.jpg

cans swell somewhat... and still seemed to fit fairly well...
they don't seem excessively tight... they are snug enough that they won't rattle around... but they seem to tilt out of the carrier with ease.

MFCmounting47.jpg

MFCmounting48.jpg

MFCmounting49.jpg

Here's some hardware removed temporarily
and the mess I've created in 'da garage. :saw::welder:

MFCmounting46.jpg

MFCmounting45.jpg

Next up, is to weld on that STM to the uprights...
and get busy with fabbing up the mounting plate for the fuel can basket.

things have been a little busy... so bare with me...

tomorrow I gotta replace brakes/rotors on all 4 corners of Da Woo
so that'll cut me short on working on the fuel can chit. :(

more progress, mock up pics

changing out the brakes on the dd went easy...
so's... had a little time to get some mock ups going...

here's the spare tire mount... tacked on good...
gonna be permanent... just ran outta weld wire.

MFCmounting64.jpg

MFCmounting63.jpg

Mounted the spare tire to 'er... just to see where it sits
just a hair off my measurement... but Imma call 'er good.

Then got busy mocking up the fuel carrier positioning...

seems I have a choice... of high or low positioning.

I'm leaning towards the higher tho'
'cause I really didn't want to block the view of the oem style reflectors.
Then I'd have to buy something to mount to the carrier's rearward side.
eh... maybe both could be incorporated. :dunno:
I'll have to think about it I guess.

Low...

MFCmounting59.jpg

High...

MFCmounting56.jpg

MFCmounting51.jpg

and a coupla' misc...

MFCmounting55.jpg

MFCmounting58.jpg

whatch'a think ?

I think it's a great plan and great workmanship, as is the the whole build.

My only concern would be getting too much weight past the rear of the axle...but I'm sure you'll know that right away.

Nice job

Pat

thanks for the compliment on 'da trailer... :)

Yes balance is of utmost consideration here.
With the additional weight of the tongue's extension and the spare tire mounted on the forward draw bar mount...

the tongue becomes excessively heavy...
and sucks fer my lower back. :frown:

with the fuel cans/carrier at the rear... and the spare at the front...
it balances out well... and then it will be easier to balance the cargo as well.

If I don't need the fuel cans... the spare tire will mount to the rear and offset the tongue weight when unladen.

Fuel cans required... spare goes to the front.

Pretty darn cool build there Dell! I especially like how you have tried to make return to original a priority and possibility...unlike my total hack job that I will soon document for all. I wonder about mounting the fuel cans up high though...a higher COG makes a trailer more prone to tipping?? Some of the places you like to go would emphasize that characteristic based on the videos you posted.....just sayin'...

Cheers!

thanks brother... :)

It's common sense that a lower COG would be a smarter choice...

Maybe...

But I don't have a like for the extended carrier depth out back and it's overhang, that lower position... creates less of a departure angle.
'least that's my thought.

off road... I've had the trailer tilt back down to it's rear bumper on most moderate type trails...
so I really don't want to drag any thing else back there.

In the low position... I think it might be of issue...
but then maybe not. :dunno:

If I did go low... I would be raising it at least 1" more then what the photo(s) show... mostly, so it better clears the tail lights.

But I'm still unconvinced that the low mount is the best way. ?

Just stumbled across this thread, and haven't read yr build linky yet, but,

wow. great work.

and my vote for MFC mount is 'high': departure angle, visual lines, and reflector/turn signal obscurance. Yes, it's another 50lbs weight of fuel at the very tail end of yr tow assembly, but sumptin tells me you've already thought it through. ;)

appreciate your compliment. :)

yep... I've had to do lots of thinking.
think my brains getting mushy as of late tho'

but yer right about everything you said....

and I'm even gonna share a coupla' pics...
as to why I feel it has to mount higher.

* depature angle ;)

spare tire clears ! :D

this one has no use here... so I'll just call it an extra :p

bonus pix are the best!!

thanks, look forward to yr next posts...

some more useless pictars... just for da' entertainment of those whom don't prefer reading... :wrench: LoL

* btw... These fuel cans are currently filled with fuel.

I'm feeling confident that the STM will bare 'da MFC/carrier weight with little issue...
and the trailer's (F-R) balance, at this point (tub empty/ST front/MFC rear)... is damn near a perfect harmony. :)

MFCmounting79.jpg

Please don't ask me, again, how I'm going to mount the spare tire to the fuel carrier...
dat's not gonna happen... so lose 'dat silly thought.
umn.gif

wutz gotta happen... is I get busy with some mo' fab work and get this carrier mounted and finished ;)

MFC carrier... mounted

Here's some views on how that went...

used a piece of 3/16" for the plate work...
I also swapped out the lug mounting nuts (seen here) for locking style lug nuts...
got 4 included in 'da purchase of these...
so... I put one front to secure the spare tire as well.

before 'da weld work...
MFCmounting110.jpg

weld work complete

MFCmounting100.jpg

MFCmounting99.jpg

still have to finish up the chains that will be securing the fuel cans in the carrier... as well as throwing some paint at 'er...

and then I can call it done. ;)

How she's sittin' for 'da moment...
obviously went with the high mount design...
and I'm good with that decision... :)

MFCmounting108.jpg

my junk getting a nose in 'cause she's not getting much attention as of late.

~ not to mention... I got a bit a house keeping done too ! ~

MFCmounting93.jpg

stay tuned... will be finishing up the fuel mount stuff shortly. :)

I gotta give ya' credit.....

You sure as hell are staying busy!!

Nice job!...looks great, and functional too!

^ thanks brother... I'm about to take a slow down...
get busy using 'er a Lil' :)

===============================

completed the Scepter MFC carrier...

was late in the evening as I wrapped 'er up, so artificial light was the call.

I farked up a Lil' bit... as the locks were suppose to go to the forward side...
but I got 'er confused in my head after I got side tracked a bit...
and then didn't think again, to realize... 'til is was too late
Never the less... it stays. just need to sleeve 'da chains and it's the end of this chapter. ;)

MFCmounting152.jpg

MFCmounting141.jpg

~ the one thing I haven't finished/decided about 'dis carrier ~

well the two center'd vertical tubes are not welded in yet. ( V this pictar )
wasn't sure if I wanted those there :dunno:
instead... was thinking of making the voids in the center of the carrier,
capable of carrying a few odds and ends... maybe somewhat boxed in with some light sheet... oh I dunno...
I'll think about that for a day or so...

MFCmounting137.jpg

MFCmounting150.jpg

MFCmounting125.jpg

MFCmounting147.jpg

Think I'll be done with projects for a Lil' bit...
time to get ready for 'da Moab :)

thanks for following along on this stage of my trailer's journey

final bling...

thought I'd show the bling chain sleeves...
just incase anyone wondered...
chose blk 'cause it was all I could find local

U might also notice... I installed one lock upside down on it's shackle (2nd pic down)
at first I 'bout chit... then came to realize that they won't lock when installed upside down... whew !.
