Ok, just my 2 cents, if it were my 40 and I was looking to go with a diesel, I wouldn't think twice; I'd put one of those new Cummins R2.8 motors in it. Its a complete package; motor, accessories, wire harness, ecu, pedal, etc all in one package from Cummins. Its just under $10K but you would be surprised at how fast a "cheaper" motor can climb close to that. I know that Tor at Torfab has done a few and he loves them. Tor did my 6.5TD conversion and the guy is simply fantastic to work with. If you have the funds, I wouldn't hesitate to have Tor do the job. if not, Cummins has made it pretty dummy proof. Could do a set of twins and build them over the valve covers. Lots of room above that engine height wise with the 40 hood. Still though that's a lot of custom stuff.
 
A dressed 6.5TD weighs about 835 lbs.

The turbo tends to be the issue with swaps - even to earlier GM pickups. It can be done, though.
