To mod or not to mod, that is the question?

I see a lot of them heavily modded in the $35k+ range....not sure if they sell, but it's what I see out there.

That is at the low end of what clean restored late model 40s are selling at the bigger auctions. A number of them double that, one close to triple.

Pure, unmolested, stock ones have gone in the 60-90k range :meh:. I think you can do nice, quality mods on these trucks and still have them be fairly valuable to the right buyer, but it has to retain the stock "look and feel" of the truck. I don't think any bolt on mods would hurt it, there have been plenty of very high value trucks with aftermarket bumpers/racks/lifts. One of the high value auction "stock" trucks even had 4-wheel disc brakes.

Once you start cutting up sheet metal/reversing shackles/going SOA/painting it wild, non-stock colors/installing different engines, or otherwise messing with the truck's "personality," people start to lose interest, and the value goes down. There's always one-off resto-mods that are truly immaculate that will still bring good money, but in general, I think this is pretty true.

I am really a purist at heart, I just bought what I bought because it was what I could afford at the time :hillbilly:. I have to say though, now I'm glad I did because I don't have to worry about mangling a collector's item. I'm still going for a very "stock-ish" look, but nobody cares what I do because it already had a V8 and chopped rear fenders.

But as others have said, it's your truck - so really only your opinion matters!

For what it's worth - I like the look of the gobi rack a lot.

It's your rig, do what you want!

If you're trying to 'make' money at it then usually you're already playing with fire (risky and doesn't always pay off). If you want it as your personal vehicle - treat it as such. It's yours and enjoy it in whatever fashion would bring you the most enjoyment of it.

I'd rather have something I'm comfortable driving than something that sits in the garage as a museum piece.

I restore, fix up, build them as a hobby...this one will get sold when I'm done.

Thanks for the input about keeping it stock, I love the steelies and hubcaps myself.

Stock rocks but the quality bolt on's that can be easily removed I don't think are a big deal on value. Now if you are planning a nut and bolt frame up-originality is EVERYTHING for value. BTW really nice rig and great color! have your checked out the Confer racks at Diamondrax? i am also considering a rack when the hardtop goes back on..............

The Diamondrax is quite pricey, for a bit more I'd rather go GOBI..

More photos of this beauty would be nice to see. Sure doesn't look like much needs to be done.
I pick her up tomorrow morning, picks for sure!!

Finally. ...

My trailer eats a tire every dang time it goes out...I-20 was littered with tire carcasses and I swear we saw 10+ people changing a tire....

At least you and the 40 arrived home safe.
