It was a thing a beauty. No vacuum lines, no switches, not even a carb fan. It was just a simple engine, a carburetor and a whole lot of space. But the best part was how it ran, smoothest idle I´ve ever heard on a cruiser. Inspiring...

Unbelivable how much room you have once all that crap is gone.

anyone have any experience in achieving a desmog in the phoenix area? i checked the dmv but they're not entirely helpful when you want to remove your emissions devices. any input on registering an 83 as a historic vehicle or where i should register it?

My 2f Is Completely Desmogged, No Egr, No Nothing. Only Vac. Lines Are For Advance, The Other For Pcv. Still Use Carb Fan Now For The Weber I Have On It, It Does Help With Heat Issues.

I recently learned that my completey desmogged FJ60 does need a couple of vacuum hoses. I have the smooth idle, tons of power with an open exhaust and flowmaster, etc.

I also have about 2 inches of flame shooting out my short ass exhaust as it shotgun blast - backfires at the bottom of long hills.

Turns out not all vacuum lines are bad. My problem is that I removed the 'Deceleration Fuel Cut' vacuum switch that keeps the bowl from filling up with unburnt fuel as I decelerate, then when I hit the gas, BANG! goes the shotgun blast out my nice flowmaster.

Also, the carb fan is a good thing, it keeps your intake - exhaust manifold from cracking as the aluminum intake cools more rapidly than the cast iron exhaust. It's a 'keeper' too, in my book.

below is a great thread on this topic with pics.

The state isn't going to help you much. Removing emission control components on a vehicle federally mandate to have said equipment and driven on public roadways is a violation of Federal Law with fines up to $10,000.

That being said, there is a lot of posts and info in the Technical Links area about desmog.

Unless specifically exempted, all 1967 and newer vehicles (including diesels) that are registered in the metro Phoenix (Area A) or Tucson (Area B) emission test areas must receive an emissions inspection no more than 90 days prior to registration.

Your vehicle must be 25 years or older to register it as a historic vehicle. All this does is give you a "Historic Vehicle" license plate, it does not exempt you from emissions testing.

Your only hope for desmog is to use an address outside the Phoenix and Tucson metropolitan areas
