Seems like I read about cold galvanizing somewhere. Maybe that would work.

That's fancy talk for zinc rich rattle can paint.

Man this is killing me on weather to use them or not haha. Or do a repair my current ones which are in ok shape but need some repairs. I mean I never plan to have a show quality 42 just a fun daily drive it any chance i get rig and go on a couple adventures.

Put them in and drive it.

Despite my early advice, I actually run my 40 year round in the northeast. I hammer the truck with copious amounts of fluid film once or twice a year.

Funny you say this. I know from experience, anywhere oil was , rust was not. I know it is not a HARD coating but a preventative. Looking deeper......

"And growing up in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada I know about rusty cars. The city of Ottawa uses 180,000 tons of road salt every winter and it's devastating to the body of a vehicle. So, even back in the early 1980's before I got into the car business I was already researching how to stop a car from rusting.

There's only one product that really stops steel from rusting, and that's oil."

I know it is not pretty , but functional.

Zinc paint used on bridges will preserve it well enough. Then sell me your old ones cheap so I can fix them up. :D

Bridges are designed so that the inorganic zinc primers can fully coat the steel. They're also designed with corrosion control in mind and avoid things like skip welds and sharp edges. Landcruiser fenders were not designed to allow coating in between panels. You can choose any coating system you want and it's only going to protect the spots it adheres to.

Oils make very poor coatings compared to modern paints because of their poor adhesion, durability, and tendency to attract dirt, but they might be the only thing that you can apply in between tight spaces.

I've got 400 miles on my NOS fenders. I had them painted. Then I had linex applied over the paint to preserve them as long as possible. I say run them.

You are going to take care of your 40 better than it ever was in its previous life. As it was said earlier. If your originals lasted 40 years without the prior owners caring for it much. Yours should last forever.
