any reason why this wouldn't work or be a good idea? i've been talking to another guy that put me on to this and it sounds good - no spacers, beefier than a mini-truck axle, and yet i've never heard of it being done by anyone else. just looking for some input i guess. thanks.

Beefier than a Mini truck? With the same sized birfs and shafts?

It has a bigger ring and pinion which is less common and harder to find comparatively.

The perches are under the axle, which is opposite of the standard.

At that point, I would rather just put spacers on a stock Mini front. A whole lot easier.

cruiser is Beefier R&P but gears and lockers are a bit more (because they are HD).. with the minitruck axle Spacers will add stress to the nuckles and steering.. the Cruiser Sounds like a good idea to me! but if your only going with 35's or somthing its kindof insignificant

Ask luke

Call Luke at 4x4labs. About a year ago he swapped an fj-60 front axle under a taco. Everything worked great. If you're competent enough to consider any axle swap, I think you could probably handle welding perches to the top of the housing. The third member is swappable with any land cruiser third, including the fj80 series rears. They were offered with factory electric lockers. Morgan Fletcher installed one in the front of his pig. Also, don't fj60s have vented rotors?

I don't know about the 60 axle, I have heard of people using the axles off of the80s. On my rig I used minitruck axle, and yes the knuckles do get stressed. I'm on my 2nd front housing. So I would recommend gussetting the the knuckles, and getting a H.P. front diff.

What are the WMS to WMS measurments of both axles?

This is like trying to fix something that isn't broken... Thousands of SAS's using a mini truck front axle; there's a reason you haven't heard about using a FJ-60 front. It's not worth the effort.

It may be wider, but spacers are fine. And I think the spring perch center to center is wider on a 60 than a mini truck, which means you'll have to go all custom compoanents for the swap, including custom steering draglink and tie rod.

Sure, the R&P may be larger, but unless you are doing extreme rock crawling, you'll never need to worry about it. There are always little things like Cryo'ing the R&P to help as well.

Skip it; go mini.

There are guys running 30 spline Longs with 40s and 42s with the mini truck R&P. They usually break the hub internals before the ring and pinion gives way, it is not the weak link.

I concur, Harry.

The mini truck housings bend and distort....proven fact by many, many people Brian. A 60 series housing would be a big improvement over a mini housing. If they were not hwheak, there would not be a market for the folks that pedal fabricated housings.....

Gear set availability?

What else do you need?

You're still upset about my bent rear housing, aren't ya? :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

While true of people who abuse their trucks, I still disagree with the 60 series being an upgrade. There are trusses fo the mini truck axles for the housing and the balls which make a nice difference. And there's even a full axle truss now availalb efor $140 out of canada that looks pretty nice.

I know people who replace Dana 60's with fabricated housings... I don't think that was done out of weakness, now, do you ? :flipoff2: Just Razzing ya, Steve. :D

Now that you're here, what's the spring eye distance on the 60 housings?

Both housings are made from the same stuff.

The 60 has a sweet, huge, low pinion diff.

The Mini has the high pinion option.

Lots of people bend mini fronts because lots of people use mini fronts abusively in sprung over applications.

I think that sums it up well, Flyg.

im looking to use a 80 axle due to the fact im using a taco rear in my 93 with the taco's width have to run 1.5 spacers allready. if i use a mini axle i need to use 3.0 spacers and that wont fly.

I have been pondering the same, there is a 60 around here for $350. the extra width comes from I think the long side, and is the same length as mini and 40 on the short side (maybe vice versa). Considering that, another consideration maybe high steer kits? Aren't 40 and mini trucks capable of running the same high steer kits, but not with 60's? (The arms would be the same, just considering tie rod/ drag link)?

This 60 didn't appear to have vented rotors fyi.
