If you're up there the 13th - 16th, there will be an extra 100 or so 100-series cruisers to contend with (on top of the thousands of Jeeps and UTVs) Those are the dates for the Hundreds In The Hills event that I am participating in.

Wow! Didn't know that; we almost went that weekend. We'll have the usual OHV traffic... and the ultrarunners. :) Have a great time!

When are you planning on heading out? Monsoons are supposed to be starting this week, so hopefully the restrictions will be lifted soon. I'm doing it the 19-22nd of this month, so I should be able to give you more beta after that. What I do know, is dispersed camping is allowed; however, anything above treeline is fragile and is not supposed to be driven on. I've camped on it before, but because it takes so long to regrow, parking on anything other than dirt can result in fines; this is a bit limiting, but you can find a spot lower in the trees around most passes.

As far as fires are concerned San Juan NF, Uncompaghre, and Gunnison are all in stage 2 restirctions (no campfires, only gas stoves/grills that have an off switch are allowed), no firearms, no smoking allowed. While much of the route is BLM, but they are all following the NF's cue and in stage 2 fire restrictions as well.

I'll update this after my trip or as I get news.

Thanks, Manona,

We'll be heading out next Weekend. I've spent a few hours scouring all the pages this evening, and pretty much everywhere I'd normally try to go is stage 2. Grand Mesa is the only area I've found still in stage 1. Don't know much about it. Doesn't look up our alley, but we'll see. However - and like you said - hopefully this rain will actually happen and help out. I also totally forgot about Hundreds in the Hills being that weekend, so that pushes me getting back on the loop until the following week (I hope I can still make that work!). I'll update if I learn/see anything new. Thanks for all your info! I'm off to rain dance...

Thanks! I forgot about the date for that (despite seeing a dozen social media posts; sigh). I'll have to try to make the following week work.

Cheers,

For the record, an extra 100 Land Cruisers is a drop in the bucket compared to all the other people out there. And don't forget there is LOTS of space to spread out. Each day has ~8 different organized runs of 12 - 16 vehicles heading off in every direction. But all the most popular trails will have a contingent every day (Black Bear, Imogene, Alpine Loop, Poughkeepsie, Clear Lake, Last Dollar, etc.)

If you head out weekend after 100, we may see you out there! I'll be the rhd 80 w/ rtt riding with two early modified broncos. We're starting Friday morning out of Silverton going counterclockwise. ~ Cheryl

Word. Good points re: traffic. I purposefully went on a Tuesday last time, which was awesome. As much as I'd love to do Black Bear and some others, with my relatively limited experience (and super-anxious wife), I doubt I'll get the chance this time. I've only done Cinnamon, which I realize is a walk in the park for most, but it was a blast for flatlanders like me. I'll have to get out there next time with a group to get some more experience (and to show my wife that we could actually do some of the other trails). We have a stock '04 lx, so I think we could handle more than just Cinnamon. I think we'll head up the Monday or Tuesday after HIH. Have a blast. I'm jealous!

Right on. I'm thinking we'll just head the Monday or Tuesday after HIH, but if that changes, I'll definitely look out for you. Have fun!

You need to attend Hundreds In The Hills next year. It's a fantastic event and this year will be my 4th time attending.

I'd love to! I'd likely have to work my way up to Black Bear and some other passes; not sure I'd fare too well on then now with my limited experience and I don't want to slow anyone down. Looks like a hell of a lot of fun, though. I've just heard it's tricky. Maybe I could make next year work. A buddy (also a 100 driver) and I have talked about driving out together.

the nice things about trying the new stuff in groups as organized stuff is that there are people who are vets at it, and expect the n00bs... that being said, BBP IS a mental adventure, and at some point you have to decide you are just going to go, hopefully with experienced people you know.

I hear you. Thanks, man.

HIH is a very family-friendly and beginner-friendly event. Most of the trails are easily run in stock vehicles as long as you have some decent tires. I have a stock suspension and BFG All-Terrains and have run nearly every trail available. This will be my fourth year attending and my second year as a trail leader.

I concur with Marc, and will add, that I would recommend going with a group like this, you'll have help on the trail with people that are very familiar with your vehicle, and will put you in a scenario to get through it fine. Also, should something occur, like breakage, there are others that will be able to assist to get you right.

Sounds awesome. I’m convinced for next year!

Cheryl,

If you want more landcruiser company, feel free to start a new thread on your trip. I bet some folks would love to join y'all!

I would be up for that! I got a big potential hitch, though... Dad was just diagnosed with cancer Friday; we're meeting with the surgeon next Monday. I may have to postpone the whole trip depending on what they say that afternoon. Otherwise, we plan on getting to Silverton Thursday afternoon and staging past Eureka that that evening and going counter-clockwise, coming out Sunday. I'll post something, though. :)
