My quest: find a 4 turn, 3/4" 36 spline shafted saginaw steering gearbox. I've had 3 68 impala gearboxes show up with the bigger input shaft now, and I'm a little frustrated...I have a downey steering shaft, and a borgeson steering shaft, and they both use the 3/4 36 spline count....Hook a brother up with a Napa/OReilly/Autozone/Carquest/A-1 Cardone part number or something, please? I've got the plate made and burned on, the steering column cut down, the support bearing in place, lines made, and can't find the right dang box...Thanks!

I don't know if this will help but I am running a saginaw with 5687962 cast in the top. It has the smaller shaft and it also has a larger 3 1/2" piston compared to the regular 3 1/8" piston. That works out to a 12% increase in turning power at the same hydraulic pressure. It came off of a J20. It is about 3 1/4 turns lock to lock. Works great on my 40.

Chef,

I went through all the same hassle of checking out several boxes with no luck before calling Advance Adapters and having them check to find out they sent me the wrong spud shaft. We traded shafts in the mail and all bolted on. Is there a chance you're seeing the same type thing? What took me in that direction was all the old timer GM guys (I even called GM) telling me there was only one size input shaft.

Actually, it's a little complicated. There are 2 shaft sizes, 3/4, and 13/16, and 2 spline counts, 30 and 36...Of the 2 j20 boxes I have (thank for that tip tho...) one was 13/16x36(too big, right spline count), and one was 3/4x30(right size, wrong count)...

Call Borgeson. They are very helpful and can get you the correct u-joint. They really helped me when I was going through my conversion.

Back from the dead

I have found some more info that can help out here. After looking for quite some years for the perfect saginaw I found on Lares Ebay page some of the autos that had the 5687962 casting numbers on them. This would be good for bone yards and auto part suppliers.

I found Napa and Autozone you have to special order. Orielys and Advanced you don't get the steering gear there then count the input shaft rotation count lock to lock.

Input shaft spline count is different between number on the box compared to numbers on the u-joint for the box doesn't have splines on the flat area. It is only 13/16 or 3/4.

Now you don't have to get a jeep part. :D

My local Napa and Kragen both had this one in stock when I went looking. Kragen was cheaper, but the casting had been ground on some, so I paid the extra $$ for the one from Napa. Works great.

Let me add some gee whiz info to this ancient post for those just now searching:
Manual boxes
63-67 Corvette 3/4-30
68-83 Corvette 3/4-36
58-64 Chevys. 3/4-36
Power boxes
1977-earlier 13/16-36
1978-newer 3/4-30

Also, my own tidbit- - -mud guys seem to love 4-plus turn boxes, they are actually poo poo, 20 to 1 ratio, too mushy on the road, I prefer the 3 1/4 to 3 1/2 turn boxes, 16 to 1 ratio better road fill, plus there is far better availability- - -just saying.

Damn guys. Sorry if I kicked the bees. I will read all the way through prior to posting in the future. I was searching for a potential replacement for mine. Bought the truck about 14 months ago and did some work at the top of the steering but the way the gear was installed the joint wasn’t visible without removing the whole gear. I have it corrected now.
