Thought I would throw these pics out. I didn't really have time to take enough pics to do a tech writeup that I felt would be good but took these pics to give some people some pics that I thought would be usefull.

Bearing I bought from Cruiseroutfitters that just taps into the end of the steering colum tube. Make the pillow block mod a thing of the past.

You can see where I cut my steering shaft.

And where I cut the tabs off the steering box mount to get it off. I also cut off the rivet heads so I could use a chisel to get the box off. A lot easier than pounding them through the frame.

bearing

where did you get that bearing used in the column to support the shaft? do you have a source or part number? is your column 1 1/2" in diameter?

Call Kurt with cruiseroutfitters he found this little gem. A lot easier than the pillowblock and basically presses in place.

alright. kurt - post up and let us know the details on this nifty bearing. also, can anyone confirm that the early columns and later columns are the same diameter? if not, can this bearing be had in a diameter that fits in the early columns?

Hey I agree. Never to much info.

It would be nice to have a complete parts list and a list of dealers who carry those parts for those of us who like to do things ourselves and like to save a little money rather than buying the whole kit. I figured that I have $700 in the whole job. A lot more than I originally thought. BUt a lot less than some of the kits out there. I spent probably 30 hrs on the whole thing which for me is free. I like the Saginaw and the ability to turn the wheel with just one finger. It gives me the freedom of being able to drive a lot futher and wheel a lot more without being worn out the next day. Though I would tell anyone in a heartbeat to drive there cruiser for at least 6 months without it. Nothing like almost breaking thumbs, and wearing your elbows and arms out getting through a nasty rock filled trail for 5 hrs.

check out cruiseroutfitters, kurt sells a kit, i picked one up from him, had all the nessesitas!

i will get ahold of kurt. i checked out cruiseroutfitters.com already, but needed a bit more information. i have all of the parts i need already, and actually completed about 90% of the install, just need the upper shaft support bearing. i have the early column (72) and didnt want to use the bronze bushing. i fabbed up a mount for the pillow block bearing, but if the bearing that Trollhole used will work in an early column, then that would be better.

can anybody confirm if the early and later steering columns are the same diameter? i already know about the other differences, i just need to know if the diameters are the same. thanks!

They are nearly the same diameter, however the later style allows you to press the bearing in (with slight mod to the shaft) and it gets sandwiched between the tube and the firewall mount plate...

With the earlier style this doesn't work, you don't have a plate to stop it... We have used the bearing in conjucntion with a "stopper" on the shaft to keep the bearing in place. I have seen people put a tack on the shaft to keep the bearing from falling, or a couple tacks on the outer bearing shell to the steering tube, all should be fine.

We actually carry a brass bushing that is made for the eariler ones, it has a much tighter fit on the tube and shouldn't move at all... Take your pick...

You could also use a clamp collar on the steering shaft to keep the bearing in place on an early column instead of the tack welds...

What are you drilling the end of the steering shaft for? I am confused plus many of the pictures are red X's.
