Hey guys! I am doing a research on a turbo kit for my land cruiser. I have found that the safari turbo from APS is a good one. I contacted the company to see if it would fit my engine, I even sent a picture of it, and they weere not able to confirm if it would fit...i have no idea why....the're suppose to know this things, maybe there are not interested to sell one turbokit to somebody so far away!! ..maybe because mine is a LHD? thats one of the reasons they tried to gave me...anyways...I would much appreciate your feedback on this. I want to install the safari turbo, and see if i can also install the intercooler...i have no idea if it would fit...maybe if you post some pictures of an engine with the kit installed would help me determine if it fits or not...

they also mentioned something about the firewall...

Thanks so much for your help!!

Im attaching a picture of the engine...and also the LC for all you LC fans!

Better for them to be honest and say they are not sure than send you a kit that will not work.
My guess is the turbo will fit but fitting an intercooler is difficult and even Toyota has not fitted intercooler tp HDJ7* because it interferes with the airflow in the engine bay.

Thanks for your reply roscoFJ73! you may be right...but i have heard that the kit has been installed before in other LC....i just can find the reference from it...about the intercooler...yes...i had my doubts....but need help fitting the safari turbo kit...and finding out if it will fit in the engine compartment..

thanks again!

From that picture they would not be able to see if it would be in contact with anything in the engine bay. As Ross says if they said yes and it did not fit for some reason this would be a problem for them. You should be able to work this out yourself if it will fit. These pics are not of a Safari but will give you some idea. cheers

Hey Jose, I am going to move this thread to the diesel section, the re-direct for this thread will be here for a month, cheers.

ABSOLUTLY, AWSOME, DroolWorthy,.... Newbie from U.S here, Mabie and this is a long shot but hearing an old episode of TOP GEAR on Google Vidio the reporter said that a LHD Fj80 did not even have a turbo option becouse it was LHD and turbo would interfear with sreering shaft.

Can't wait to move from this country becouse your Goverment is smarter and allows diesels.

*EDIT* For BrownBear^^^^^^^^^^"Where Diesel's Don't!!!!"

The FJ80 never got a turbo because its a petrol engined cruiser:D
Some american owners have fitted the 1HDT (TURBO) engine to their LHD 80 series landcruiser so it is possible.

Jose ,try AXT turbos in Melbourne for an opinion, they send them all over the world.

Hi Jose, the intake manifold and exhaust manifold from a LHD HJ80 series 4200 cc Turbo diesel will fit. The intake is around $125 and the 2 piece exhaust is around $300.00. It is a direct bolt on, you can find the parts at the Toyota Dealer in your Country. I got the prices from Purdy Motors in Costa Rica. Well the turbo, you can install an oem turbo and here the cost is around $1800.00. Check your Toyota Dealer, maybe they have that in stock. The tube bending can be done by a muffler shop.
Saludos

It's a link to google vidio, uh, this 80's got one, but I think I know what your trying to say and yes, I am compleatly wrong on the turbo thing.

P.S fast Fwd about 20minutes

Thanks for the link. Jeremy Clarkson is a true Englishman standing by his British range rover .
He reckoned the competition was getting closer(80 series and G wagen) but the RR was still best 4wd in the world circa 1991

Its a pity motoring journos dont come back and retest the same vehicles 10 years and 250000 miles later and compare the maintance records:rolleyes:.

A friend I go wheeling with had a RR identical to the one in the video and he sold it out of pure frustration with ongoing parts replacement ,mainly electrical ,and this was on a RR that was looked after and never used offroad prior to him owning it.

Another friend had a 80 series of a similar vintage and sold it due to financial difficulty.
Its now in the hands of someone locally who never maintains it and its looking rather forlorn but its never stopped and has many more miles on it than the other friends RR.

Jeremy Clarkson should realize why Toyota bumped the british built 4x4 out of the real 4wd markets of Africa and Australia.

The English country lanes he wheels in for 10-15 mins are what some owners do all day, every day and they dont have the Royal Automobile Club waiting off camera to tow them home either :D

Hijack and rant over :flipoff2:

HZ - Safari Turbo - works like a charm. I ordered it direct from APS about 2? years ago. bolted on, new exhaust, brain dead simple. That was for a FJ60 engine bay. An Alaskan I was with this summer has a turbo, intercooled little 75 series. I can see no reason it wouldn't work for you. I was just inspecting underhood after a bouncy weekend.

*** You will probably have to do a little custom exhaust work and plumb an oil dump into your oil pan, so it's a little more involved with a NA-HZ.

Depending on when you make your order and where you are, I might be interested in piggybacking with an intercooler :)

And if you order it, make sure you get the Altitude compensator -that's a little tricky to install as there are no instructions. AND-MUST - EGT guage. All those little "gotcha's".

Hey David! Gracias for the information....I will post in the panama4x4 forum because i really need advice in this matter. I really want to install the safari turbo kit into my LC, but I am looking for pictures of LC that already have it, to see how it is installed..because I have no idea....but i havent been so succesfull to find any....I would like to know if it fits my engine compartment well...and see how it looks intalled...maybe you guys can help out...

by the way, i have a question for you guys! is it true you must drive the first 1000 miles withouth going to high on the RPMs?? is this true? I thought the engines are already run at the Toyota Plant to see if they have any malfuctionining....

Jose!

Jose!

I believe when new ,they have a special "running in oil" in them and by the 1st oil change it is run in.

I dont think driving at low rpms is so important these days as the engines are built to a higher precision.
I would drive it at all rpms under 3000 but not for too long

I would keep soft driving .. under 1000 km .. just for safety .. but in fact Dealers drivers don't care about rules in new engines ..
