prado strip down begun

Hello guys,

I have begun to take down parts from the prado. I have taken some pictures and labelled some pipes etc. i have also removed some parts.
i will start a new thread that would document my journey through this. Hopefully i can open a thread later tonight.
I just had this question, can someone recommend a diesel machine shop in edmonton that can swap cylinder head parts.

I am in talks with the claims dept. of the company that i bought the vehicle from. We will see what is Finalized before i say anything about them here.

thank you.

Ali sounds like the company you got your LJ78 from may help you ..
Keep us posted as to the out come.. Also let us know where you put your new thread so we can all folow your progress.

Wayne do you carry the bolt on metal cooling fan and spacer for the LJ78??
I was thinking of doing the clutch service But I'm leaning towards the metal fan and spacer.. Less to maintain.. and you know it is always working.. You can PM me with cost..

the fixed stub is available from ENS and the steel fan i am still working on, in the mean time you can buy the stub and the adapter for your plastic fan from ENS...
if i find one that wokrs or that needs minor mods i will post it up, i need to go for a walk through pick-a-part...i know the 2F one fits but it doesn't move enough air...

I think you could put a 1KZ-TE in there no problem. But those engines don't come cheap.

In all my reading on UK and Aussie Surf forums, I've never heard of a replacement head failing in the same manner as the original head.

I think the cracking problem must be caused by poor design or a batch of impure iron or maybe trying to cut corners by using green castings.

Anyway, until the units with replacement heads start logging up around 60,000 or 100,000 kms, there's no saying whether or not the fix is unreliable.

Robin

I love my 1KZ-T equipped Prado. It's THE most comfortable Land Cruiser I own. That engine pulls hard and runs strong--holding one consistent temp ALWAYS.

Wayne will the plastic fan survive bolted to the none clutched spacer

No chance of that here.. But I would still like the metal fan I think..
I emailed ENS yesterday but no response yet..
Is there a chance that you can give me the part numbers..I could check out here, to see if I can get them.

Moose I'm not so much worried about freeing up a little bit of horse power as I am about cooling the motor, the truck is a turtle anyway but sure dose pull ..

I'm just trying to get away without having to service another part..AND put something on that you know is working..

As far as electrics go I think (note I said think) You would have to remove the shroud from the back of the rad.. along with the stock cooling fan.. Then find something that will bolt up to the rad..and have lots of CFM's to move a lot of air.

crank up the boost to allow better burning and lower EGTs (and better power on the hills), larger exhaust to expell the spent gasses and related heat faster, EGR blocked off, larger cored rad, fixed fan, new water pump at time of head install... to name a few and of course the very esential pyrometer installed and watched with resulting driving habit change...

Thanks. I hope to find out how much of that was actually done! Stupid question though, what is EGR?

Electric fans attach directly to the rad through the fins, 2000cfm is typical for a twin fan unit. They come with their own shroud, and are pretty much standard modifications for any performance engine where heat is an issue.

Most fans I've seen claim 5-10% increase in hp and fuel efficiency. That's not bad....

Perhaps do both...remove the clutch on the stock fan and install a pusher fan on the front of the radiator to keep high volumes moving at low engine rpms, when the mechanical fan isn't spinning very fast. Keep in mind that our plastic fans are not flex fans, the angle of attack on the fins is set for highest rpm, not idle.

Hi,

Would anyone recommed a machine shop that specialized in diesels or toyotas in edmonton, Alberta.
I have RM169E which is a supplemntal manual. Is there a more detailed manual out there for the 2LT engine.

thank you.

RM123E covers the 2L and 3L. Nothing on the 2LTE, though there is a lot in common with the late 2L.

AFAIK no one has an English language manual for the 2LTE because AFAIK it was never sold outside Japan.

I'd tell the exporter to pay you whatever you lose on the repairs/sale pronto or you'll tell the world about their QC program.

If the truck was straight out of auction this might be understandable, but ex-stock there is no excuse.

Has anyone researched an twin electric fan assembly for our trucks? It would seem a good solution for over-heating in the troubled models and would also free up some horsepower.

Hello everyone my name's Andy and I too have and LJ78. Its my first time to post but I've been reading the posts for several weeks now. My LJ78 came with 2 fans mounted on the front of its radiator. Both turn on when I turn on the AC. I'm about to have a 1kz transplanted in place of the 2LTE.
cheers,
Andy

Hi there Andy !! And welcome to the IH8MUd board.
I hope you are going to take lots of pictures of the engine swap out
and post so every one will be able to see what's going on in your engine compartment.. Sound cool..

Any ways welcome..

Thanks Richard.
I can relate to what Ali's going through. My engine coughs up white smoke when i start it; also have to top up with oil every week. There are quite a lot of LJ78's in my part of the world and all have the same problem. I'd rather swap the engine than go through the pains of en engine rebuild. I will post pics soon as I figure it out.

Andy

We've had our LJ73 for over 2 years now. Zero head problems in all kinds of weather and conditions.

Perhaps the head was replaced in Germany before we bought it. Temps never rise over halfway.

Seems to be kinda the same with mine temp wise, since the rad was rebuilt.
Not haveing any records from previous owner(s) makes it hard to know what was or what was not done.

10,000kms since April. watching the temp all the way.. :-)

great read guys..

I've got a 1991 pre-cracker state. I know more likely than not I will be summoned by the head gods. Personally i want the 3litre installed if it should crack as I had one in Japan and while in the city the difference isnt so big..on the freeway its crystal clear. Just wait and see and start saving now

Prado heads

I'm just curious about something a dealer told me recently when I inquired about a Prado with the 'trouble' engine. He said they can do a head swap to the 3.0L head (I believe the trouble is the 2.4L head). Is this at all changing/helping the issue? I don't know a lot about engines so maybe the suggestion is bunk. From what I understand this is not an engine swap to the 1KZ which I think is the 3.0L but a swap to increase the displacement on the 2TLE, is that right? If so, the cooling issues will remain as the whole 'system' is the same just with a larger head in place. Maybe I understood him wrong and none of this is even possible.

Curious/ignorant
