Not wanting to come across as negative, but I do not think the factory brace that you welded to the new bumper will hold. Not doubting your welding ability, just the weight acting as leverage on the bumper will aid it in flexing then bending the bumper in turn denting sheet metal.If you are in a hole and some goes to pull you out backward I can see someone have a bad day. I'm far from being an expert and write this in a postive manner just my .02 . I like the tire rack on the bumper alot.

I think the weak point in the setup is the point where it attaches to the frame. I see this being a point where something could easily sheer, especially since it isn't boxed in that area. I've thought about beefing it up there. I see a lot of aftermarket bumper that mount the same way. I don't trust my welding skills either, so I'm going to add all of my welds to my PMCS checklist just to keep it safe. If I see any cracking or bending, it's back to the drawing board.
 
Well Albert, I thought about it last night and I've decided that I don't trust the welds that attach the bumper to the stock channel mounts. The are probably good as is, but with the added weight and continuous stress of a tire carrier, they are prone to fatigue. I think the that stock channel is pretty stout though.

When I finish all of this up, I'm going to go back to those welds and bridge over them with 3/16" plate to distribute the loads across a larger weld area and to keep the joint from fatiguing over time.
 
One my first red Toyota (85 extra cab) I build a NICE rear bumper and welded the factory mount to attach it to the truck. 1st time i pulled a trailer with weight on it and pressed on the brakes I folded the rear bumper under my truck. The frame, bumper, welds held but the bracket did not. The factory bracket (that was much thinner metal than the bumper) folded. Rebuilt with with 1/4" which may be over kill and was fine from that day on.The bumper held up to a double axle trailer carrying a 60 from Lafayette to Port Barrie.
 
What type of 1/4" did you use and how did you get the drop? I know a lot of people come straight out off the frame to a plate, and then another plate to the bumper. The plates are bolted together and there is a drop on the plate.

I've yanked and been yanked using that old bumper as well as beating it on rocks without issues so farm. All I did was cut that one off. However, this bumper will have more leverage against the brackets.
 
Finished the tire carrier tonight and will mount it and wire up the light for the license plate in the morn.
 
Mounted and good to go as of first thing this morning. Yesterday I reinforced the bumper, strengthened the spindle pipe by welding some 1/4" pieces inside, finished welded, ground, and painted it with VHT epoxy paint (I like this stuff). This morning was just mounting and wiring up the light for the license plate. I can hang off the tire with no issue. Feels nice and sturdy, but I will keep checking the welds.

PS, I'm going to be ordering a matching rim for the spare. I already have a like-new tire for the new rim.
 
Hope to get out on a trail soon...I assume you mean off road.

I know what you mean though! There is an even coming up in a few weeks that is being ran by a local Jeep club. Though I may not feel like going after next weekend's trip to Augusta.

There is a weld at the bottom of the tire carrier and a weld slight further up. So, the idea is that the carrier cannot come off unless it is opened at least 45 degrees. It locks in like a light bulb I guess. Gravity takes care of the rest!

I have LA plates because I do not want to be double-taxed for something I shouldn't be taxed for. I pay enough taxes to this state on top of my gas! In my opinion, I should have been able to trade my LA plates for IL plates that expire on the same date and IL can get their money from LA! Registration is the biggest BS tax in my book!
