I've seen rubber gaskets for sale to go under door hinges, hood hinges, emblems, etc. Question is, were there gaskets in these places from the factory? If not, do you guys recommend adding them? I'm doing a full restoration/rebuild on a 1980 FJ40, so I'll have new paint everywhere...

I'd refer to SOR's website, they have diagrams of how a lot of that stuff is supposed to be from the factory...

I recall reading a recent thread about the same topic and the concensus was the hood hinges, door hinges, rear emblems and bib had a gasket from factory. While the repro gaskets will protect the paint they will squeeze out and then crack along the edges after some time.

I am up in the air wether or not I will be buying them. There is a guy on eBay that has several sets for sale.

What? Not in '78. Only the mirrors.

The hinges, doors and tops were fastened to primered bodies and then painted the final color. Under the hinges, primer-only.

You can make your own easily enough out of inner tubes or sheet rubber...

I cut some out from the rubbery cove-base material a couple of years ago. No color fade, no cracking...easy to cut, and you can put a little sand paper on the spots that might be cut a little rough... I used it under my emblems, side mirrors, and hood hinges.
