RTH: H55 shifter removal

I need to pull the transmission and want to make sure I do it correctly... does the transmission need to be in neutral, etc to remove the shifter? how is the shifter attached to the tranny?

There's a metal collar on the base that you push down and twist counter clockwise to release the shifter. It's a pretty tight fit. I'm having a bitch of a time installing the shifter on mine!

Yeah it doesn't really matter what gear its in when you pull it. Just don't take off the top plate, because then the shift forks will move around and you'll get confused.
