Does anyone have a link or can post up the instructions per the Factory service manual(which I don't have yet)on how to replace both identical matching belts on a 1997 FJ80/LX450? This is also knows as the alternator/waterpump belts. Yes, belts. It has two and they're both identical.

I've done many belts before, but I want to make sure I get everything right and don't make it tougher on myself.

Thanks!

:beer:Super fun... enjoy and take your time!!!

now I'm thinking the PO router the belts incorrectly. Can someone post a pic up of how the belts are supposed to be routed from the alternator pull and idler pulley? I'm thinking the belts go under, not over the idler pulley

The belt goes around the harmonic balancer up to the alternator with it touching the bottom of the belt then over to the water pump pulley...and times 2. ;)

Post a pic of how it was!

Get a load of this....

Um... ok.... I guess it works that way too. Good catch in finding it was wrong.

Yeah, it'll work, but I think it would put too much stress on the bearing for the idler pulley. I don't even think the other belt that snapped was the same sized, as these two belts should be matched.

And don't use the cogged belts. OEM are about $12 for a pair.

Thank you for posting this. Apparently I'm not only missing the nut for the alt behind the idler pulley, but I'm also missing the tensioner it's self. No wonder the belts were so loose.

Whoa! I thought I has problems. I bet once you install the idler pulley, it'll be quieter too.

I removed the useless idler pulley 25K miles ago. I also don't have the bolt in the alt. 'tensioner'. Neither are truly needed.

Just bought an 1997 80 a month ago, and I just realized is missing the idler pulley. Would be good to know how many removed it.

My personal opinion, the has to be a reason why is there. I can see the the belt shake a little bit. Maybe its purpose is to give better tension to the belts.

Any feedback?
