Thanks for the replies.

It seems that they get into the car (I'm not sure how) and then hook up something akin to tech stream, program their keys and disable yours. The first night they seemed to only be able to disable mine, with pretty much zero disruption to the car. The next night they stole it, and when I found it, there was some dash disassembly, which looks minor at first glance. The police, the towing company, and the locksmith said that there has been a ton of Lexus/Toyota theft lately because people have discovered it isn't difficult.

My problem is that I brought a bunch of stuff and my dog up here in the truck, so flying home isn't a great option, unless Executive Jet does a groupon. Rental agencies are dried up for some reason. I'm also hoping they can band-aid my truck well enough for me to get it home, saving me an additional round trip to Montreal.

Was yours parked near your room? Possible they used one of the relay attack devices to get in? If they did I don't know why they wouldn't have just driven away.. maybe they are also programming keys to make it more usable after stolen.

The relay attack is why my stored spare key is in a faraday pouch even if it's inside my house.

Are the more modern LXs equipped with any ability for lexus to track the location and/or disable the vehicle? Like what OnStar can do?

Fast forward to 2:20 if you haven't heard of the relay attack:

We are 17 floors up, so I don't think they have the range, but who knows, maybe that thing is sensitive (only about 20 feet laterally). It was weird why they didn't take it the first time. Maybe they've got people as lookouts and saw us coming.

Really annoying as I bought this thing in part to make this long trip. Now..... Maybe it will fit in a garage in low mode.

The Lexus showed its last location on my app. Actually a pretty accurate fix in a hospital parking lot.

That video isn't encouraging. I kind don't think they used one of those. They had broken part of my door handle and pulled my BlueDriver dongle out.

Interior or exterior door handle?

There was no sign of forced entry? You not mentioning it is the only reason I thought about a relay attack.

The good thing about the method used in the video is it is very easy to avoid. Storing the key in an old metal lunchbox or similar defeats it. Or the faraday pouches available on amazon for cheap.

Do you have pics of the damage ?

No photos. Just a 2" vertical scratch in the paint above the lock on the handle, the plastic surround broken off, small ding in the metal housing of the mechanism itself. Like they pounded a small prybar to get to the lock.

with out a key or a key near by whenever they shut the car off that would be it, no restarting it. I don't think that their interested in the resale value too much, probably just needed 1 key to be able to move the truck around to its final destination

what's the device the hacker is using? do they sell them on eBay?

I guess I'll ask the next obvious question: is there anything that we as owners can do about this? I.e. mods to the system to prevent easy theft?

Removing the OBD port would be one solution. Simply tucking it up inside the dash may slow them down enough that they wouldn’t want to deal with it and move on.

Next iteration of this idea could be to remove the original OBD plug and add some kind of adapter plug in series.. if you have to do anything via the port dig your OBD adapter plug out of its hiding spot and use that. Obviously we are talking needing some experience with wiring to do this right.

edit: Or, a legit alarm I guess.. as much as I hate the unreliability introduced by adding on to factory wiring.

I think we can add a glass break sensor to the factory alarm though it wouldn’t have helped in this case.

My solution of choice would be to pick a single wire on the OBD port and add a hidden switch to that wire. Easy to reverse if needed.

Right, you could just put a mini fuse in it. You'd have to pick a good wire though. I was trying to see if there was a cutout or something available. I found this, skip the first two minutes of Econ 101.

Not sure why they wouldn't trace it back and pull it apart at the connection, though. But if it costs them some time....

What I'd really like is awesome timing and an axe handle.

Without doubt.. but he had the most clear video of what this does that I could find quickly. Might say something about my youtube search results I guess.
