This is a build/log of my 3rd Land Cruiser.

Cruiser 1: 2004, bought at 240k in 2017, sold at 290k in 2021.

Cruiser 2: 2008 LX570, 64k miles. Buying this in 2021 prompted me to sell #1. Silver, so nice. Too nice that all I did was put AT tires on it. Felt bad messing with such a mint vehicle. Had for 1 yr and sold for a nice profit. Thanks COVID. Sold 2022

The lost year that was 2022: 2008 LS460. Beautiful car, so smooth, quiet, killer stereo. But, not a cruiser. PM me if you want to buy

That brings me back to Land Cruiser ownership. I just couldn’t stay away. The utility, the function, the character…
Cruiser 3: 1999 LC, 204kmiles. Rear locker, warm silver or whatever. I like it. When I’m done with it I think it might end up being my favorite…

This thing was/is pretty rough. Seller didn’t put any effort into cleaning or fixing really anything. Oh well, I was itching to get my hands dirty. With my previous 04, I regret not doing more of the work myself, so with this one I am determined to learn a thing or two.

First thing first, this thing was running rough! Like knock your teeth out rough. Guy said it was the motor mounts. Something about that didn’t seem right. Read tons on here about “vibrations in D”, and “exhaust boom”. After about a week of thinking and looking, I figured out it was the fan clutch. Seized up and self destructing. Took some close looking, but I could tell it wasn’t sitting true to the engine. Ordered replacement Aisin and 3.5 hrs later, moment of truth. Running like a top. An hour of that was prying off the old clutch after removing the nuts. Geez.

You can see what appears to be a retainer ring leaving the chat.

Prior to doing the fan clutch I did the routine recommended by 2001LC for a tune up. Disconnected battery, cleaned MAF sensor, throttle body, new air filter, fuel system cleaner in the tank. I actually did this the first day I got it thinking I would have an easy fix. No dice. Hopefully the fan clutch might be the issue for some other unsolved mysteries.

Replacing fan clutch helped “vibrations in D”?
