It's time i introduce myself. I told myself that as soon as i get the truck running i would do a intro thread and i'm at that point. I got this truck from my cousin a few months ago and it's been sitting at his house for about 9 years. He bought this truck from a kid that had it and drove to and from college at about 30 miles one way and finally realized that a fj40 doesn't make a very good highway vehicle is Los Angeles so he parked the 40 and bought himself a honda. When my cousin bought it it's been sitting for a number of years and my cousin got it running and registered it and promptly parked it in the garage because he went through a divorce.
9 years later I came into the picture. I towed it home thinking all i had to do is put fuel in the tank, recharge the battery and drive. Wrong! At some point somebody must have used some kind of tank sealant on the inside of the tank because the outlet tube was clogged so i had to remove the tank and "roto rooter" the tube out, it worked. Next I had to rebuild the carb because the float was stuck open and when i opened the carb everything inside was stuck. After the carb rebuild i change the clutch master and slave because the master clutch reservoir was empty and streaks were on the inside firewall and from all the info i gathered on this site, when you have to change one, the other is not far behind. Well i finally got it idling and shifting, next is getting it smogged and registered. I have a soon to be 16 yr old son and this is going to be his dd to and from high school, hope he appreciates it. After i straighten out the smog then it's power steering time!
Thanks guys!

Nice looking rig.
I'm sure your son will enjoy it.

nice rig! Looks almost identical to the one i just bought off a guy in New Zealand.

If it doesn't work out with your 16 year old, you can adopt me.

And i'm going for a new look with tall and skinny with some mini rims i got from a friend, he had these rims sitting in his garage for about 25 yrs. I also had to clean up the pan a bit because when i removed the tank, the recess was filled with sand and dirt.

Gonna cost me a tad over $2,000 to get it here. Few more bucks to get it ready for shipping. Still think I made a good choice with having about $5,000 into it after getting it here.

Bone stock on the engine. The rear fender's been cut and there's a lift on it. The tires on there are 33X12.5x15 but will get some 33x10.5 with the steelies.

No he's not helping much, and it's not a surprise. I got the feeling that he might want my '08 civic si over the 40 but we shall see how he likes it when it's driving. You know how it is, when you're a teenager, the old man is out of touch and don't know want the hell he's talking about. At lease he's humoring me at this point.

HaHa...I know that feeling. Can you imagine someone offering to put you in an FJ40 and not being totally stoked?? I had this experience with my step daughter only it was a '60. I guess she thought the cool kids weren't driving 'em so she didn't want it. What does a teenager know about cool anyway?

I don't know.

That tub looks AMAZING. What a lucky son you have you be given a 40 to drive to school. Shoulda bought him a BJ-40 though. Better mileage, and can't go fast enough to do any real damage. In fact, you might want to misplace two or three spark plug wires now. ;)

EDIT--I just noticed the bottle jack. Nothing but jealousy here.

Dan

Thanks guys for all the kind words and support. I hope one day when he has his own family that he'll look back and can say that the old man really did love him.
Thanks

Keikoroo,

Do your son and yourself a huge favor and make sure the brakes work better than new. I upgraded the front calipers to '94 4Runner calipers (bigger) and also converted the rears from drum to disk. When I was a new driver, I came very close to rear-ending more than a few folks. Good brakes were all that saved me!
