Looking for information about roof racks for 1988 BJ 73 with frp-roof. Must be strong enough to carry a 12 foot aluminum boat weighing about 150 lbs.

What service manual would you recommend for 1988 bj-73 tlc with a 3b engine.

Thanks Rusty1

IMO the FRP wont handle a roof rack. The holes will elongate and damage the roof especially offroad.
The only type I would fit is one that sits on the front gutters and is supported by tube at the rear bumper.

The only really good FSM is Toyotas own manuals. Gregorys are the next best I think

They exist, thou I have no info for you. Search the forum. I remember somebody mentioning it a few months ago. Not sure it was here.
But then, I would not put a roof rack for that kind of weights directly on the FRP.
I once had a kind of rack (aux fuel tank) with large support plate underneath. Total weight about 45 kgs (110 lbs). When cracks started to develop in the upper corners of the backdoor area, I removed it.
I now have a system that is bolted to the body itself ( see my avatar or introduction picture) It's a self-build.
Others build a cage inside with struts going through the FRP-roof. This also is strong enough when properly constructed, but the holes tend to leak when it rains.

150 lbs total is average 37 lbs per point for a typical four point rack secured by clamps to the side and rear gutters. That might be a bit too much for a rough gravel road but OK for paved highway. OK for an ocasional trip into the bush, probably not for everyday. No simple answer. The more you want to pay for a roof rack the more you'll be able to carry in rough terrain every day.

A simple roof rack can be made with a standard bar rack connected to the side door gutters. The 2nd bar can be cut in half, clamped to the rear door gutter, and extended to the front cross bar with aluminum angles or tubes. I found a set of simple crossbars for a few bucks in a 2nd hand store, and easily modified them to fit the FRP roof gutters.

I don't carry anything heavier than a canoe on mine.

Not to be cheeky..... BUT a trailer is the best choice IMOP. Look at the M101 trailers in the trailer section here on mud. You can make a cool mount for your boat on the roof, and carry all the gear safely.

I bought a rack for my 60, then bought the trailer... I think the rack will stay off most times. Unless I was driving to South America.
