roof rack damage pics

My roof rack damaged the paint by rubbing through the paint down to the primer.

I used stainless steel screws and the self sealing washers that have the rubber washer attached to one side. both were bought at Home Depot. I made a set of rubber gaskets to stop the rack from rubbing away more of the paint.

My rack was differant than most that I have read about here. Most racks have the screw rust to the nutsert. On mine the screw did one of those dissimular metal corrocion things inside the tube that the screw passes throught to hold the foot of the rack to the roof. I had to cut the foot apart and turn the foot to get the screw to back out of the nutsert. It was good fun.

Did all US spec cruisers have those luggage racks as there seems to be alot of disscusion about rust were the racks sat. Seems strange that so many have them over there and none here have them. From the problems that you have with them I'd say we got lucky.

My 91 did not have a rack.

Just about all of them did. And just about all of them carried little more than a Christmas tree now and then and ended up causing a major pain in the arse down the road.

IIRC they were all port or dealer installed. For some reason they couldn't import them with the rack. So yes you got lucky.

That said there are a few US 80's wo/ the Rust Rack...
