Had a great weekend up at Sourgras. Fishing was great and so was the wheeling!

Hey very cool rig! Is your truck named after a fictional horse or a fictional spaceship (which is named after a fictional horse)?

I named the truck after a real truck, which was named after a fictional horse.

Truck has been great the last few months. I finally replaced the (very) bent front driveshaft with a heavy duty unit from South Bay driveline. (Video of bend here: Instagram post by Steve Johnson • Aug 21, 2017 at 6:03pm UTC)

I bend a stock or all pro long spline unit every ~18 months. Hopefully this 1.875" unit will hold up better.

With my wedding, wheeling has been on the back burner. But I was able to take the truck up for the second trip of the year. Took the truck up to the Rubicon this weekend. It was a blast as always. I love being close enough to the trail that I can leave Saturday morning, wheel the trail, and be back home by Sunday night.

Its been awhile since I last updated this thread. Truck is still good, but only made one trip this summer. Hoping to get it out of the garage more this winter.

Rocinante has moved to daily driver status for the last couple weeks. I love driving this truck!

Very inspiring thread! Now I want to build my 89' pickup for the Rubicon trail! :steer: I like the name also, I live on Rocinante Road.
Love the pics as well, keep them coming!

Not much progress to report on. I fixed an oil leak on the rear diff, fixed the parking brake, swapped the rear brake pads, installed new front brake lines, and replaced the transmission mount.

This weekend I pulled it out of the garage to clean the camper out, including putting my gear on a diet.

All is well. Other than a power steering leak, its ready for the summer.

I’m hate to say it, but from the last post to now I did not drive the truck more than 5 miles. Now it is 2 months late for SMOG, and time for a tune up so I can enjoy driving it again!

I did the basics - oil, oil filter, air filter, plugs, cap and rotor.

One note for people searching in the future: the o-ring between the distributor cap and distributor was badly worn out, letting dirt into the engine. It is a bear to find in the Toyota catalog as it is incorrectly named a dust proof packing - but the part number is 19127-15021.

Oil change went as expected, but I did get a new tool recently called a form-a-funnel. I always hated how the oil would drain right on top of my differential, so this solves my problem.

When I got to the spark plugs, I did find all 4 to be very wet with gas. I thought it was odd because the truck sat for a week before I pulled the plugs. I am assumming this up to be a side effect of running slightly larger than stock injectors- but maybe it is something else? I’m unclear. The truck otherwise runs great.

At the same time I ran a compression check. All cylinders are within spec, and are within 14psi of each other - right where they should be.

In addition to the compression check I decided to use my inspection camera to look inside each cylinder. There is some rust build up above the top of the rings on the cylinder walls, but it all appears to be normal.

With this work complete, now I can find out if it passes smog!

Just enjoyed your thread front to back! Awesome rig! Quick question about your rear Deavers. Were you able to use your frenched hangers from the 63s? I bought the hanger kit for 63's then found out about Deavers and am considering changing directions and was curious if the 61" Deavers (I assume that's the Deaver spring you switched to) could utilize the 63" hangers. Thanks.

Yes, I used the 63” hangers from ruffstuff. I just had to cut off one ear to make them fit.

As a pet peeve: I hate frenched front hangers. The rear spring eye on the rear springs needs to be higher than the front spring eye to minimize rearsteer.

Those are the hangers I bought as well. So, you didn't like them frenched because.... it limited your rear spring eye height?

I didn’t french them because it raised the spring eye too high. I couldn’t raise the shackle an equal amount and didn’t want the additional rear steer
